Dafne Keen Teases Terrifying Research for Her New Horror Movie Whistle

The initial trailer for Corin Hardy’s new horror project titled “Whistle” has been unveiled. This movie is inspired by the Aztec death whistle (or skull whistles). Directed by Hardy and written by Owen Egerton, who also wrote the original story upon which the film is based, “Whistle” was recently acquired by Independent Film Company (IFC) and Shudder in May. At San Diego Comic-Con 2025, lead actors Dafne Keen and Sophie Nélisse spoke with ComicBook about their roles. Notably, Nélisse admitted she stayed away from researching the whistle’s mythology because it terrified her, while Keen showed more curiosity towards the artifact’s history, although she humorously suggested it might not have been the wisest choice.

In simpler terms, Keen admitted to doing something quite foolish upon returning from the U.K., as he was so exhausted from jet lag that he decided to push through the day and attempt to sleep at night. He stumbled upon the concept of a “death whistle” and, feeling both terrified and intrigued, decided to watch Yellowjackets. This only intensified his fear, as Sophie also felt frightened. Fortunately, their shared fear led them to have a sleepover instead. Although he did some research on the topic, Keen believes there are misconceptions surrounding it, with some information being positive while other accounts were horrifying, like in a movie.

Dafne Keen May Have Dug Too Deeply Into Whistle‘s Inspiration

In addition to Sky Yang, the cast of this production includes Nick Frost, known for Shaun of the Dead; Michelle Fairley, a star from Game of Thrones; Ali Skovbye from Firefly Lane; and Percy Hynes White, who appeared in My Old Ass.

The formal description for the movie Whistle goes like this: ‘A gang of oddball high school students accidentally find an enchanted artifact, an ancient Aztec Death Whistle. They soon learn that by blowing the whistle and the eerie sound it makes, they’re summoning their own demises to pursue them. As more deaths occur among their friends, they embark on a desperate mission to uncover the origins of this lethal trinket, hoping to halt the dreadful sequence of events they have unwittingly triggered.’

In his statement issued through AMC Networks earlier this year, Hardy expressed that “Whistle” shares the raw, rebellious essence of my beloved genre films from my childhood. He added, “The allure of the ‘Death Whistle’ and its potential to orchestrate a diverse array of captivating, imaginative, and chilling deaths drew me in. This movie is designed for a thrilling cinematic experience, so I’m excited for viewers to join us in blowing the whistle with The Independent Film Company and Shudder in theaters!

Adam Koehler, the Director of Acquisitions and Productions, expressed his delight, stating, “We’re thrilled to share Corin Hardy’s exceptional skills with audiences nationwide as we unveil this chilling spectacle.” He further emphasized, “Whistle is a gruesome and gory masterpiece that promises to be one of the most terrifying and frightening horror films in contemporary cinema history.

Whistle is slated for a wide theatrical release in 2026.
