As stated by Alexander Devrient, the actor portraying Colonel Ibrahim, there is an equally fervent dedication to sustainability off-camera. The show’s carbon footprint decreased significantly from season 14 to season 15, and the intention is to continue this reduction for the upcoming spin-off as well.

Regarding UNIT, the place where I spent a significant amount of my time, it’s fascinating to observe how they consistently adapted UNIT into various forms. For instance, during our latest confrontation in season 2, after a few days of intense fighting, I returned to find that the scene was utterly transformed – the battle had left it in ruins.
Later on, I returned another time, and everything seemed as if it had gone back in time to its old days. It felt like stepping into a 1950s or 1960s scene. They are incredibly talented at recycling sets, something I find truly impressive.
Ahead of shooting the spin-off, the cast were also briefed about sustainability.
Devrient remembers that prior to filming the spin-off, there was a workshop lasting approximately an hour and a half. During this session, we gathered with the main cast, and a man presented strategies to minimize our carbon footprint during filming for The War Between the Land and the Sea.
Without a doubt, I can’t disclose any spoilers, but the series delves deeply into the importance of caring for our Earth and the potential repercussions when we fail to do so properly.
Furthermore, it was crucial for us to grasp the workings of production prior to commencing our shoot, ensuring we had a clear awareness and comprehension of their processes.
He mentions: “They gave us a glimpse into some aspects of season 1 [of Doctor Who], including its carbon footprint, materials utilized, set operations, and our plans regarding cars.
“They provided us with a brief overview of the structure’s initial state and its transformation in season 2. They also mentioned that they significantly decreased the carbon footprint for season 2. Moreover, for ‘The War Between,’ they aimed to further reduce it, given the relevant themes of the series.”
Currently, discussions regarding the future of Doctor Who are more intense than ever following the surprising finale scene from the previous season, where Ncuti Gatwa transformed into Billie Piper (a moment that had even Devrient shedding tears).
Despite not revealing much about the upcoming spin-off, Devrient assures us that he hasn’t departed and neither has UNIT. Kate Stewart, portrayed by Jemma Redgrave, is actively involved in the ongoing events.
At UNIT, every day is exciting and far from dull. Although we’ve been through a lot, there’s always more work ahead. You’ll find that’s true even in the upcoming spin-off series.
Beyond his role on Doctor Who, Devrient has shown great enthusiasm towards sustainability for quite some time now. Yet, he’s always ready to stress that nobody’s flawless, particularly in a sector where occasional air travel is sometimes necessary.
“It’s been something that has been on my mind for many years,” he explains.
As a devoted supporter, I can’t forget the electrifying experience I had attending a Fridays for Future march down Westminster. The crowd’s average age took me by surprise as it was predominantly filled with an array of young faces – children and classes accompanied by their dedicated teachers.
It’s truly heartening to witness such a large number of young individuals taking an interest in environmental issues, considering our future, the role of fossil fuels, and advocating for change. They seem to grasp concepts that I, myself, didn’t fully understand until much later in life. Their passion is commendable.
He mentions: “I’m involved in various industries due to my multilingual abilities, which occasionally require me to travel by air. This may not always result in an eco-friendly carbon footprint.
Yet, he acknowledges that people have their limits – contrary to the claims some large corporations may make.
He notes that the idea originated as BP introduced and popularized the term “carbon footprint” during the early 2000s.
The notion suggests that everyone should examine their own accountability. Instead of pointing fingers, it implies that we, as individuals, are at fault if we’re not acting correctly. However, this perspective overlooks the fact that collective responsibility is crucial, and indeed, major oil companies like them have a significant role to play in these issues as well.
Devrient appreciates the support from his fellow actors, such as Bella Ramsey, who publicly advocated for sustainability during The Last of Us season 2, and Benedict Cumberbatch.
