The Winter Soldier, after the events of The Avengers.
Since the Multiverse Saga in the Marvel Cinematic Universe hasn’t been quite as successful as the Infinity Saga, but still managed some impressive retcon maneuvers after Endgame, there have been several notable ones. For instance, Eternals introduced a race of near-immortal beings who’ve influenced Earth’s history for millennia. Similarly, the mythology of the MCU’s “Mandarin” was rectified in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. More recently, Captain America: Brave New World attempted to tidy up several loose ends in MCU storytelling (with mixed results). However, many fans didn’t anticipate that the new animated series, Eyes of Wakanda, would deliver as many surprising retcons to both Black Panther’s lore and the broader MCU as it has.
WARNING: SPOILERS FOLLOW!
The Destiny of the Vibranium Ax
In the fourth installment of the series, “The Last Panther,” we follow the tale of Prince Tafari (Zeke Alton) and Kuda (Steve Toussaint), two War Dogs from the 19th century. They are dispatched into the heat of the First Italo-Ethiopian War’s battleground, tasked with recovering a Vibranium Ax that was pilfered by a pirate and concealed within a clock. However, when the mission seems too perilous to continue, Tafari disregards Kuda’s counsel and single-handedly infiltrates the war zone to retrieve the ax. The duo return to Wakanda as victors, but their triumph is short-lived as they receive an unexpected visit from the Black Panther of a future era (the 24th century).
In the future, the last Black Panther, portrayed by Anika Noni Rose, forewarns of a grim destiny. In her era, Erik Killmonger did not seize the Vibranium artifact from a British museum in the 21st century, which triggered the sequence of events depicted in the original Black Panther film – including the revelation of King T’Challa ending Wakanda’s seclusion and welcoming the world into their borders. Had this political change not occurred, Wakanda would not have shared its advanced technology with the globe, leaving Earth vulnerable to an invasion by a menacing force known as the Horde when the threat finally materialized.
Tafari finds himself in a significant dilemma within the realm of science fiction: he must either fulfill his duty to his kingdom or disregard immediate orders to safeguard not only Wakanda but also the world at large. Ultimately, the prince must think as a future monarch would and ensure the enduring legacy of his kingdom, even beyond his reign.
Eyes of Wakanda Just Made Killmonger More Crucial Than Ever
Erik Killmonger, portrayed brilliantly by Michael B. Jordan, is one of the most popular antagonists in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for good reason. Jordan’s performance delved deeply into a character who became an extremist due to trauma, violence, and exploitation by a country and government that didn’t truly appreciate him. This unsettling portrayal of socio-political rebellion was powerful because it was simple to empathize with Killmonger’s viewpoint and anger, often causing viewers to overlook the devastating consequences his methods would bring about in pursuit of “liberation” for his people. The complex interplay between righteous intentions and harmful actions continues to spark debates among fans.
As a movie critic, I must say that the latest installment in the Black Panther franchise, titled “Eyes of Wakanda,” has significantly expanded the narrative, casting Erik Killmonger as a crucial element shaping Wakanda’s fate. Without his presence, it seems certain that both the kingdom and the world would have plunged into chaos.
From “Black Panther” to “Wakanda Forever,” “Eyes of Wakanda,” and even the episodes featuring him in “What If…?”, Killmonger has become an integral part of a chain reaction, pushing T’Challa towards bolder decisions for Wakanda, encouraging Shuri to claim her destiny as the Black Panther, and ultimately preventing Earth from facing extinction.
Given the profound impact he continues to have on the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it is only natural that fans keep a flicker of hope burning within them, hoping against hope that Jordan will reprise his role as Killmonger before (or soon after) the Multiverse Saga concludes.
In terms of Marvel Cinematic Universe plot twists, the finale of “Eyes of Wakanda” neatly ties in with the start of “Black Panther,” beautifully reinforcing the franchise’s dominant theme of heritage. Catch it streaming on Disney+.
