Hollywood legend Eddie Murphy is indelibly linked with the action-comedy genre due to his groundbreaking roles in movies like Beverly Hills Cop and 48 Hrs during the 1980s.
But in The Pickup – his latest film for Prime Video – Murphy was faced with a new acting challenge.
In the film, we see the story unfold about two unlikely armored truck drivers, who find themselves in a dangerous situation when they are attacked by merciless thugs during an ordinary delivery. Murphy’s character then partners with a more youthful coworker portrayed by Pete Davidson to navigate through this perilous ordeal.
Murphy explains that he believed the disagreement among the young man, the older man, the white man, and the black man, as well as the married man and the unmarried man, would result in a humorous situation.
As a cinephile, I’d put it this way: “I find myself drawn to unique humor, and if we were remaking ’48 Hrs’, I’d embrace the role of the Nick Nolte character. After all, that’s the era I identify with now.
Throughout a career lasting more than four decades, Murphy has found humor in various circumstances and viewpoints, which he’s always appreciated.
In my perspective, I can’t help but admire the skillful use of makeup and prosthetics in cinematic masterpieces like “The Nutty Professor” and “Coming to America.” These films showcase a level of artistry that truly sets them apart.
Should I don my makeup transforming myself into an elderly woman, it’s not just laughter as I once knew it, but adopting a humor that suits this new character. I can’t simply replicate my previous style of humor; instead, I must discover a way to make the old lady within me chuckle.
Working with Kevin Murphy, a comically gifted actor, proved to be a fortunate opportunity for director Tim Story, as Murphy infuses each scene with his unique brand of humor and spontaneous, unforeseen improvisations.
The filmmaker mentioned initially that regarding the script’s humor, we should not fret as Eddie would ensure it was amusing. However, focus on making the scenes coherent instead.
In simpler terms, Murphy emphasizes that every good comedy should have a strong foundation in an engaging story, and the humor will flow organically from it.
He also emphasizes the importance of incorporating an element of surprise – guiding the audience towards an unfamiliar and exciting path.
He ponders, ‘How often do I find myself at the movies, only to realize within 10 minutes that there will be a fight between some characters, others will end up together romantically, and predictable events will unfold?’ This is usually the case with most films.
In my perspective, there’s nothing quite like diving headfirst into an engaging tale where each turn of the page or moment on screen unravels another layer of intrigue. Within mere minutes, I find myself captivated, no longer questioning the twists and turns that lie ahead, but rather eagerly witnessing them unfold. The key element that binds it all together is a compelling narrative at its core.
In addition to Eddie Murphy, Keke Palmer and Pete Davidson will also be featured in The Pickup. These actors were thrilled at the prospect of appearing in a major action film with a substantial budget, but what truly excited them was the chance to collaborate with the legendary actor from Trading Places.
Much of the film was set within a truck, with its success largely attributed to the organic interaction between Davidson and Murphy. Being former Saturday Night Live cast members, their shared improv comedy experience generated an unscripted dynamism during filming.
According to Davidson, the phrase “GOAT” is frequently used casually these days, but it truly fits him. Following each take, they’d finish and Tim [Story] would encourage him by saying, “Feel free to go all out!
1. “He empowered us to discover enjoyable things, and we’d locate what worked effectively, continually emphasizing it, making the process exciting. Collaborating with someone exceptionally skilled in improvisation was entertaining.”
2. “He entrusted us to uncover fun items, and once we found something effective, we’d persistently drive home that idea, which made the experience thrilling. It was delightful working with a master of improvisation.”
3. “He delegated the task of discovering enjoyable elements to us, and when we hit upon something successful, we’d keep refining it, making the journey entertaining. Working alongside someone who excels in improv was a pleasure.”
Murphy mentions: “I often find myself needing to think on my feet, and I truly enjoy collaborating with fellow actors who are also skilled at improvisation as it gives dialogue a more vibrant and lively quality.
You provide them with the written text, but also adjust it slightly, perhaps adding some elements or removing others, so as to create a more natural and conversational flow.
More recently, Palmer shared the screen with SZA in the buddy comedy “One of Them Days,” premiered in March, and the actress from “Nope” shares that working with Murphy during the filming of “The Pickup” was a motivational experience in terms of approaching comedy as an actor.
She remarks, “Eddie Murphy has a knack for not overstepping, which is his unique talent. He adapts to the situation and crafts his improvisation based on subtleties in the environment that often go unnoticed.
Not only is he the dominant speaker in the room, but he manages to resonate with the audience as well, all without appearing to make an effort. Watching him inspired me greatly, giving me confidence to emulate his style.
