It appears that Sony Pictures is rumored to be producing an independent animated film focusing on a beloved character from the Spider-Verse universe. Despite numerous film adaptations of Spider-Man, many of which are highly regarded, the ownership rights for movies are held by Sony rather than Disney. This unique arrangement allows Sony to continue utilizing the character in Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) appearances, but it also means that they have independently produced films featuring Spidey’s villains to explore opportunities beyond the MCU.
Despite the disappointing performance of their villain spin-offs, Sony has found success elsewhere, particularly in the animated Spider-Man universe featuring Miles Morales. The Spider-Verse films have been hugely popular, earning an Oscar, and though we may have a wait for the third and final installment of the Miles Morales trilogy, Sony Pictures is looking to expand their animated Spider-Man universe beyond this series. There are rumors that after the release of Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, Sony might continue producing animated Spider-Man movies even without Miles Morales as the main character. Now, it seems these rumors may indeed come true.
Spider-Punk Is Getting His Own Spider-Man Movie Spin-Off
Based on Deadline’s report, Sony Pictures is developing a new animated Spider-Verse series focusing on Spider-Punk, the punk rock version of Spider-Man voiced by Daniel Kaluuya from “Get Out.” This character made a brief appearance in “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” and he will reappear in the sequel, titled “Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.” However, it’s also rumored that Spider-Punk will get his own standalone movie. The script for this project is being written by Daniel Kaluuya himself and Ajon Singh, but details about the plot are currently being kept confidential. It seems like this project is picking up steam within Sony Pictures.
Currently, we’re unsure about the release date of this upcoming movie. Given that Sony appears to be focusing heavily on finishing “Beyond the Spider-Verse,” it seems reasonable to assume that this new movie might follow afterwards. Additionally, Sony is producing a live-action Spider-Noir TV series for Amazon Prime, where Nicholas Cage will bring his animated Spider-Verse character to life in real life.
Alongside the ongoing events surrounding “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” featuring Tom Holland, which started filming recently and appears unrelated to the current Spider-Verse productions, it’s worth noting that Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige mentioned they are not yet ready to delve into Miles Morales in live-action. Given Sony’s ongoing Spider-Verse trilogy, fans should not anticipate seeing Miles in the MCU for some time.
