Chappell Roan is not in a rush to release new music.
Approximately two years since her first album, “The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess,” created a global sensation, the 27-year-old (born Kayleigh Rose Amstutz) hinted that fans might need to be patient for another album from her.
As a die-hard enthusiast, I can confirm that, during my conversation with Vogue (August 4th), Chappell made it crystal clear: the second project isn’t on the horizon just yet. No album. No song compilation. It’s all still in the realm of imagination for now.
After unveiling her long-anticipated single “The Giver,” which she first showcased live during her musical guest spot on Saturday Night Live last November, she shared that she plans to rest and recuperate following the creative endeavor involved in crafting her Grammy-winning album.
Chappell mentioned that it took him five years to complete the initial work, and he anticipates a similar timeline for the next one. He’s not the kind of author who can produce quickly.
She went on to say, “I don’t believe I produce quality music when I feel compelled to do so. There are times I read comments such as, ‘She’s absent from the studio.’ Regardless of spending 12 hours a day in the studio every single day, it doesn’t guarantee that an album will come out any quicker.
It’s possible that such type of comments motivated the artist famous for “HOT TO GO” to mostly avoid using social media, particularly when he is immersed in a new creative endeavor.
She conveyed her dislike for social media and its impact on both her personally and artistically. She decided not to subject herself to it any longer. For the first time, she has written an album without relying on Instagram or similar platforms. The creation of this album is a completely private and personal process; no one on TikTok will get a sneak peek.
Ever since I catapulted into stardom as an unexpected pop sensation, Chappell has never shied away from dishing out the raw truth about life in the limelight. In fact, she boldly claims that she’d be even more revered if I didn’t express my candid thoughts so openly.
She expressed to the BBC in January that she believes she could achieve greater success if she were comfortable with suppressing her initial reactions. In other words, if she could override her natural impulses when they signal danger or discomfort, she would grow and progress more significantly.
After cancelling multiple music festival performances a few months ago, she attributed her decision-making process for taking on new projects to the guidance of her late grandfather Dennis Chappell, who was the source of her stage name’s inspiration.
In everything I do professionally, I often reflect on a statement he made: ‘There are always alternatives.’ Therefore, when someone suggests, ‘Perform at this event because you’ll likely never receive such compensation again,’ it barely registers any impact.” – The “Pink Pony Club” singer reminisced.
She mentioned, “If I’m not up for it at the moment, there’s always an alternative way.” Or simply, “There’s always another route to take if I’m not ready now.” She often ponders on the fact that “there’s no shortage of possibilities in life.

It might appear as though Chappell Roan suddenly appeared on the scene, but in truth, she’s been creating music since her high school days. This Missouri native has shared covers and original tracks on YouTube for quite some time. Atlantic Records eventually discovered her talent during her senior year, a feat that felt somewhat anticlimactic amidst the hallways of Willard High School.
In a chat with Amazon Music last November, she shared that they publicly announced it. They essentially said, “Congratulations Kayleigh Amstutz for joining Atlantic Records, and oh, by the way, we’re having pizza for lunch.
Your favorite artist’s favorite artist turned to her family when coming up with her alter ego.
The individual who is popularly known as a singer was actually born Kayleigh Rose Amstutz on February 19, 1998, in Willard, Missouri. However, she never felt deeply associated with this birth name and often expressed that her musical inspiration stemmed from the favorites of her grandfather.
In the heartfelt interview with Cherwell back in August 2022, I shared that my unique moniker, Roan, is a tribute to my beloved grandfather, Dennis K. Chappell. Before he bravely battled brain cancer and passed away in 2016, we made a promise: I would carry on his legacy by adopting the name Chappell in his honor. This special name originates from one of his favorite songs, “The Strawberry Roan,” an old Western ballad about a beautiful reddish-pink horse. Needless to say, it holds immense sentimental value for me.
Growing up, Chappell attended church multiple times a week, a ritual that made her feel trapped.
She shared with Variety in September 2023 that she yearned to see herself as a virtuous individual, yet there existed within her an irresistible urge to break free. She often slipped away secretly, but still attended church services three times weekly. It was this peculiar contrast between striving for goodness and desiring rebellion, symbolized by the urge to ignite things.
Currently, regarding her spiritual connection, “Kaleidoscope” singer expresses that she has moved away from the church, yet she continues to appreciate the perspective it offered her.
She shared with Vanity Fair in September 2023 that she no longer align herself with the Christian Church, but expressed gratitude for her time within the community as she can empathize with their viewpoint. She explained, ‘I comprehend their perspective. I know where they’re coming from. I hold a different interpretation when it comes to complex issues that many find perplexing and say, ‘That’s bewildering!’
This midwestern princess was almost a Mid-WED-stern princess.
In a TikTok posted in July 2023, she shared that she had been on the brink of marriage not once, but twice, but chose to keep further details private.
Although specifics about her earlier relationships are scarce, the artist known for “Hot to Go” has never hesitated to throw subtle jabs at past romances. Before performing her chart-topping song “My Kink is Karma” at the 2024 Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival, she sent a fiery, veiled message to one of her exes.
She declared that the tune was meant for her former partner. “What a strange twist of fate,” she mused, “that you transformed into all you despised, while I blossomed into the personification of my dreams.
And at a later performance she spoke directly to her ex’s new fiancé.
She mentioned that the following song is dedicated to her former partner, who boasted about dating her at a local bar from her hometown. Essentially, this tune serves as a hint to their current partner: perhaps it’s time for a split.
Initially, Chappell’s first release was intended to be called “Femininomenon“, matching her 2022 single with the same name. However, she found that fans might struggle with pronunciation, leading her to change the title. Instead, she chose “The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess” as it reflects her Midwestern background, which was important for her to incorporate.
She shared with Variety, “I felt compelled to incorporate the Midwest into my work since it plays such a significant role in my life. It impacts my music, style, songwriting, and overall vibe. I strive to represent the Midwestern essence because it’s a crucial part of who I am. I used to think I had lost that side of me when I was younger, but now I don’t feel that way anymore.
The revised title more accurately portrays the narrative of Chappell departing from her rural Missouri hometown to chase a career in music within Los Angeles.
After being signed to Atlantic Records for five years, Chappell was dropped by the label in 2020.
She mentioned that the problem was their belief that her song “Pink Pony Club,” which she created with producer Dan Nigro, might not do well during the pandemic or match the “gothic” style of her music at that particular moment.
She shared during an interview on Q with Tom Power that her partnership concluded similarly to many artists who parted ways with their record labels in 2020. Essentially, if an artist wasn’t generating income, they were let go in 2020. The music industry was struggling due to the pandemic, as touring is a primary source of revenue for musicians and it was the year 2020. Since she wasn’t touring, her label chose not to invest in her song ‘Pink Pony’, which was released in April 2020 – an unfortunate time for such a club track to debut, as it didn’t align with the label’s priorities at that point.
As Atlantic Records bid me farewell, I found myself back in my humble Missouri abode, nestled under the watchful eyes of my dear parents. My days took on a new rhythm as I joined the local drive-through crew in my beloved hometown. This period was marked by deep introspection and soul-searching about my path within the entertainment industry.
As she recalled, “I was just kind of like, ‘I wonder if this is really for me.’”
Instead, she persisted in pursuing her musical aspirations by working on her unique style independently.
In an interview with Rolling Stone in 2022, she expressed that despite the challenging nature of a five-year experience she once had, looking back, she now considers it to be the greatest blessing. She also added that her journey towards independence showed her that she is self-reliant.
Chappell isn’t Dan’s only pop princess.
In the year 2020, Dan initially joined forces with Olivia Rodrigo when he chanced upon a video of her singing an as-yet unpublished song titled “Happier” on Instagram. Following this serendipitous encounter, they subsequently worked together on the track “Driver’s License,” which catapulted Olivia into the limelight of mainstream popularity.
Meanwhile, Dan was enjoying his time with Olivia, Chappell was spending her days in Missouri, focusing on her individual music projects. Upon returning to Los Angeles and resuming work with Dan, Chappell met Olivia and the two have been nearly inseparable ever since.
In the spring of 2022 and at the start of 2024, I had the privilege of being the opening act for Olivia’s “SOUR” Tour in San Francisco and her “GUTS” world tour respectively.
She expressed astonishment, saying something like, “Wow, I can’t believe it… Just last May, I performed my first headline show to 200 people, and now, in under two years, I’m playing to 20,000! It’s an incredibly rapid rise. But I’m thrilled about it because I had opened for her once in San Francisco last May too, with a crowd of 9,000. Although that was smaller, the energy was electric because many of her fans are younger than mine.” This was shared during a November 2023 interview on Triple J radio.
Apart from performing as an opening act for the “Driver’s License” singer on two occasions, Chappell has also lent her voice to the backing tracks in numerous songs of hers.
During an interview with Capital Buzz, she disclosed that she sang backing vocals for the songs “Obsessed,” “Lacy,” “Bad Idea, Right?,” and the track “Can’t Catch Me Now” which she recorded for the 2023 movie The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes.
During a chat on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Genesis Webb, my stylist, and I explained our creative approach. We draw inspiration from drag, horror movies, burlesque, and theater for our extravagant looks. As for me, I enjoy the contrast between being attractive yet eerie, or tastefully tacky, or simply unconventional. I appreciate all of those styles too.
Regardless of whether she wears a transparent latex miniskirt, a fake pig snout, or sparkling butterfly wings adorned with rhinestones, this extremely contemporary woman always has the knack for making an impression with her gaze.
The performer remembered when she understood that Chappell Roan was not only her stage identity, but also her character in drag.
In London, a drag queen named Crayola performed before me. This was something she mentioned on Q with Tom Power. She said, ‘You’re not just putting on makeup, you’re a drag queen,’ and I was taken aback, thinking ‘Oh my god.’ That really made an impact on me. Since then, I’ve embraced this identity wholeheartedly, finding it liberating to say, ‘Chappell Roan is my drag persona.’ I believe this has also helped me personally to distinguish it as a profession.
During his guest spot on “The Tonight Show”, Chappell paid tribute to Sasha Colby, the victor of Ru Paul’s Drag Race season 15, by acknowledging her as the muse for his phrase, “I’m the favorite artist of your favorite artist.
She explained, “That comment was about Sasha Colby.” She added, “She claims to be her idol’s favorite drag queen.” This realization struck her deeply, so she exclaimed, “I hope someday Sasha Colby recognizes me,” which is why she spoke up.
Approximately a month past, the drag superstar made an appearance on stage alongside Chappell during their performance at the 2024 Capitol Hill Block Party.
In 2022, Chappell was diagnosed with Bipolar II disorder. She revealed that her journey to stardom motivated her to find assistance.
She shared with Rolling Stone in September 2024 that her childhood was filled with misery. She felt like an outsider, being incredibly timid, self-conscious, and humble. Her parents could only do their utmost to help.
Ultimately, she added, “I came to understand that I couldn’t carry on living in this state. I couldn’t bear the weight of constant depression or the hopelessness that made me consider taking my own life. I decided it was time to regain control.
Ever since receiving her diagnosis, Chappell has made a point of openly sharing her battles with mental health issues aiming to shatter stereotypes related to this subject.
She shared on Instagram that it significantly impacts her life on a regular basis and plays a substantial role in her music. At the moment, she’s doing quite well, and she felt compelled to speak up about this matter. In her opinion, discussing mental health is crucial.
This Midwestern princess won’t be dating another singer anytime in the future.
In a candid confession to Rolling Stone in September 2024, the “School Nights” singer openly stated, “I have no desire to date another artist. They’re simply too unpredictable.
In March 2025, Chappell disclosed that she’s been enjoying a wonderful six-month-long relationship.
“It’s serious,” she said on the Call Her Daddypodcast. “I’m very in love.”
She added, “I’m dating the same person that I was dating before [my career] blew up.”
During an event in Ohio back in early 2024, Chappell publicly identified herself as a lesbian, having previously dated men.
She told Rolling Stone that it was never intended for her to sleep with men, and now the idea of even kissing a man makes her uncomfortable because she believes no one can compare to women in terms of quality.
Despite the fact that she occasionally grapples with feelings of discomfort regarding her sexuality, she acknowledged this truth. “I can’t understand why it’s such a challenge for me,” she admitted. “It shouldn’t be, but there seems to be something amiss, and I need to come to terms with it.
As a passionate devotee, I’d put it this way: Though there are moments of unease, Chappell unabashedly claims her queer essence. Yet, she doesn’t feel compelled to discuss it non-stop, every waking moment. Instead, it’s just another facet of who she is, woven seamlessly into the tapestry of her existence.
At the 2024 Governor’s Ball in June, Chappell shared with the crowd that she declined an invitation from President Joe Biden for a performance at the White House, celebrating Pride Month.
She made it clear that her choice was driven by the desire for equality, fairness, and individual rights for everyone. Only then will she make an appearance.
During the performance, she also demanded equal rights for marginalized communities.
She underscored her statement while adorned in a costume reminiscent of the Statue of Liberty, “I’m a huge fan of the most remarkable queen there is,” she declared. However, let me remind you of what’s inscribed on my delicate toes: ‘Give me your weary, your destitute, your massed huddles longing to be free.’ This translates to support for transgender rights, women’s rights, and freedom for all oppressed individuals residing in occupied territories.
Before my empowering tribute to Joan of Arc at the 2024 VMAs, I stood up for myself on the red carpet when a photographer made an inappropriate comment. After he said, “Quiet down,” I retaliated by firmly telling him, “You quiet down! Don’t talk to me like that, buddy.
Her reasoning for standing up for herself is quite simple.
She expressed her disdain for the fame surrounding it, stating to Newsweek, “I’m not accustomed to this and I don’t plan on being overly compliant to someone asking me to be quiet.
Chappell demonstrated that she has an exceptional memory for faces, as she recalled a past unpleasant encounter with another photographer at the premiere of Netflix’s concert film, Olivia Rodrigo: GUTS World Tour, and addressed it accordingly.
At the Grammy Awards, she spoke to a photographer and said, “You treated me impolitely during the event, shouting at me at the Grammy party. Yes, your behavior is fresh in my mind. It was extremely inconsiderate of you. I am entitled to an apology for that instance. You owe me an apology.
Although famed for her popular viral pop tunes, this Grammy-winning artist is veering in a new direction by donning her cowboy boots and releasing a country number titled “The Giver.
Chappell mentioned on an episode of ‘Today’s Country Radio with Kelleigh Bannen’ on Apple Music in March 2025 that he decided to compose a country song because it seemed amusing to him. He described the song as having a playful and enjoyable vibe.
Although the tune served as a chance for playfulness, Chappell clarified that it marked a reconnection with her musical foundations.
Originating from southwest Missouri, she added, “I was raised on a blend of Christian and country music. Then, I stumbled upon ‘Alejandro’ by Lady Gaga and thought, ‘This might be for me as well.’ So, the essence of country music remains close to my heart.
The well-known singer of “Red Wine Supernova,” who has openly discussed the truths of stardom since her rapid rise, asserted that she would receive even greater acclaim if she weren’t as open with her thoughts.
In January 2025, Chappell expressed to The BBC that he believes his success could increase if he could suppress his initial reactions. He suggested that by overriding more of his instinctual responses, which often tell him to halt when he feels uncomfortable, he could achieve greater things.
