At the latest Nintendo Direct Partner Presentation, Square Enix and Team Asano unveiled a fresh game titled “The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tale“. Instead of the usual anticipation for a turn-based style game, spectators were taken aback to find that this new offering is actually an Action RPG. The protagonist navigates through a brand new world armed with weapons such as a sword, bow, and bombs. After the broadcast, Square Enix made available a demo of “The Adventures of Elliot” on the Nintendo Switch 2, which appears to share many similarities with Nintendo’s Zelda series, particularly its 2D games like “A Link to the Past“.
In a recent interview posted on Square Enix’s official website, Team Asano shared some background details about the project. Unlike the gameplay in Octopath Traveler, this new project takes a distinct direction, as the developers aim to experiment beyond one specific genre. Tomoya Asano, who oversees concept and planning for the game, emphasized that The Adventures of Elliot represents another milestone in their quest to continue pushing boundaries and challenging themselves.
In the development journey of the HD-2D series, we’ve moved from one genre to another. We initially created a classic RPG with Octopath Traveler and then ventured into strategy games with Triangle Strategy. As we considered our next step, we felt that pushing ourselves towards an action RPG would be an exciting direction. Of course, our aim is to share this new game with fans of our previous titles like Bravely Default, Octopath Traveler, and Triangle Strategy. I’d be thrilled if it could also attract a fresh group of gamers as well!
Switching genres opens up a chance for “The Adventures of Elliot” to appeal to audiences beyond Square Enix’s typical fanbase. The response to the demo has been quite favorable, with social media buzzing with compliments about what Square Enix has presented so far. However, the game isn’t due until 2026, but the demo could certainly attract players who might not have considered playing it otherwise.
Currently, only the Nintendo Switch 2 hosts the demonstration version of “The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tale“. However, once the full game is released, it will be accessible on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam as well. Let’s hope that Square Enix increases the reach of the demo over the next few weeks, making it easier for more gamers to try the game before its launch. New video game franchises often struggle to find an audience, so providing a wider range of players with early access could be beneficial.
