One striking narrative technique used in the popular series One Piece involves drawing comparisons between characters to delve into key themes. These comparisons can be either subtle or overt and frequently spark fan debates. A notable parallel depicted in the story is that of Monkey D. Luffy and Gol D. Roger, which underscores ideas like inherited resolve, liberty, and the Pirate King’s legacy. Although Roger’s journey has concluded, Luffy’s adventure is ongoing, suggesting he will surpass the achievements of the original Pirate King.
It turns out that not only Luffy, but also his crew members share similarities with the Roger Pirates that were previously unnoticed. Key figures like Zoro and Sanji are integral to the crew, not just because of their power, but also due to their steadfast loyalty and capacity for sound judgment when Luffy isn’t around. In the same vein, Roger was supported by Silver Rayleigh and Scopper Gaban. While Rayleight was revealed during the Sabaody Archipelago Arc after the time-skip, Gaban recently joined the Straw Hats in the Elbaf Arc. Although the series has subtly hinted at the similarities between Luffy’s and Roger’s teams, the latest Chapter 1156 cover officially confirms this connection.
One Piece Chapter 1156 Cover Confirms the Roger Pirate Parallels in This Era
In a recent post from the official Twitter account of One Piece, a time-lapse video was shared that showcased the drawing process for this cover’s creation. Originally, Oda planned a more heartwarming scene featuring the Straw Hat crew interacting with animals. However, he eventually shifted gears to emphasize the similarities between the Monster Trio of the Straw Hats and the strongest members of the Roger Pirates. Ultimately, Nami was given center stage as usual, while Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji remained relatively small in comparison to her.
The cover confirms that Sanji is an integral member of the crew, despite some debate among fans. Similar to how Gaban is known as Roger’s right-hand man, Sanji is often seen as Luffy’s equivalent. However, traditionally, the role of first mate implies greater authority, which some argue should be held by someone other than Sanji or Zoro. The similarities between Zoro and Rayleigh, both being swordsmen and first mates, are quite evident. Oda has subtly suggested that Zoro and Sanji possess comparable power levels. However, it’s important to note that personal biases can influence fan interpretations of the series.
This version maintains the original meaning while aiming for clarity and readability. I used simpler sentence structures and more everyday language to make the text more accessible to a broad audience.
While navigating the seas, the Roger Pirates’ members Gaban and Rayleigh engaged in a continuous rivalry for the second-highest position within their crew, following Roger. In a similar vein, Sanji and Zoro have been locked in competition since they first crossed paths, and their dispute remains unresolved. Over time, both characters have seen considerable development, with Zoro now mastering Conqueror’s Haki, but Sanji is not far from matching this feat. Luffy and his newfound powers are yet to make an appearance in Elbaf, and as usual, the trio will continue to evolve, drawing nearer to surpassing even the might of the Pirate King and his crew.
