PlayStation has unveiled a shift in its business strategy, aiming to broaden the distribution of PlayStation games across platforms such as Xbox. This move mirrors a recent decision made by Xbox, which saw games like Sea of Thieves, Hi-Fi Rush, Forza: Horizon 5, and others becoming accessible on PlayStation 5, despite initially being classified as “PlayStation exclusives.” This trend suggests that the era of exclusive titles might be coming to an end with Sony and PlayStation embracing a more inclusive approach.
The initial move has begun in this case, as Helldivers 2 is scheduled to debut on Xbox on August 26, which will be the first PlayStation exclusive game making its way to its previous adversary. For some time now, PC has been receiving a significant number of PlayStation games, but it seems the floodgates may soon open. If this happens, here are five games that could potentially join Xbox’s collection.
5. The Last of Us
Has Sony capitalized on a franchise or game series more extensively than “The Last of Us”? Since 2013, they have only released two games in the series, but due to multiple re-releases and special editions, it seems as though they have maximized the potential of this franchise. A complete edition containing both games along with additional collector’s items has even been made available recently. This edition would indeed be an ideal candidate for a release on Xbox platforms.
Furthermore, “The Last of Us” is often regarded as the epitome of narrative excellence in gaming, making it a likely contender for a broader fanbase. Given the popularity of the HBO series, despite some criticism towards its second season, Sony may be eager to bring it to Xbox this time around.
4. Horizon
The games Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Forbidden West are both exclusive to PlayStation, with the former released in 2017 and the latter in 2022. These titles have received widespread acclaim and stand out among PlayStation games due to their unique storylines, as they don’t often get produced elsewhere.
Additionally, it’s worth mentioning that Sony is planning to create a movie based on the popular game series, which was initially intended as a TV show. This cinematic venture could significantly boost anticipation and leverage interest in both the original games and the new adaptation.
3. Astro Bot
On one side, Astro Bot checks all boxes for a game Sony might consider approving for Xbox. Released in 2024, it’s still quite new but has already made waves as the eighth-best selling game across console history. This impressive achievement is even more notable given its recent release date. Astro Bot is widely praised and, remarkably, was named Game of the Year.
From another perspective, it’s quite unlikely that Astro Bot will appear on any platform other than PlayStation. Given the strong emotional connection many players have with their iconic character, it seems improbable they would let it venture elsewhere. Additionally, the game was designed specifically for the DualSense controller, which Xbox does not possess. Making adaptations could be necessary, but Sony might prefer to keep this game exclusive to their platform.
2. God of War
The revival of the God of War franchise has been truly spectacular. With the 2018 debut and its sequel, Ragnarok, released in 2022, these games are often ranked among the greatest of the century. Given that the latest title didn’t appear on Xbox without its predecessor, it makes perfect sense to consider them as a duology. Their recent release, widespread popularity, and critical acclaim make them highly attractive for sales on a new platform.
Not only does this development present an opportunity for Sony to generate additional revenue, but they could potentially bundle the original trilogy and offer it on Xbox. While this might involve some work, Xbox already provides access to games dating back to the Xbox 360 era through services like Game Pass and for purchase, so it’s plausible that PlayStation 3 era games and even more could be made available as well.
This move creates a new income stream for Sony, as they might consider packaging the original trilogy and selling it on Xbox. While this would likely require some effort, given that Xbox offers access to games from as far back as the Xbox 360 era through Game Pass and for purchase, making PlayStation 3 era games available could potentially be achieved.
1. Marvel’s Spider-Man
It’s likely that the three Spider-Man games, including Marvel’s Spider-Man, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, and the Miles Morales spin-off, will eventually be available on Xbox platforms as well. These titles have been hugely popular on PlayStation consoles, with the second game receiving critical acclaim in 2023, making it more current than some other games.
As a gaming enthusiast, I couldn’t resist the allure of Spider-Man 2 when it dropped in 2023. Given how popular the character is and the immense love for Insomniac’s games, it’s no surprise that Sony saw this as their golden ticket to impressive sales figures. In fact, I even splurged on a brand new PlayStation 5 just to experience this web-slinging adventure firsthand!
