After 8 Years This Sci-Fi Anime Franchise Approaches Its Finale (And Is Totally Worth Following)

86 had dominated fan discussions when the anime adaptation was released, but even though there hasn’t been a sequel or additional content since then, fans continue to read the light novel enthusiastically. Now, this heart-wrenching sci-fi fantasy is approaching its final arc, and considering the pattern of previous storylines and arcs, it won’t be long before we say goodbye to this enduring series. Hopefully, the conclusion will pave the way for a resumption of the anime at some point in the future.

It’s been confirmed that the final arc of the light novel “86 – Eighty-Six,” written by Asato Asato and illustrated by Shirabii, will begin with the release of its 14th volume, titled “Paint It Black.” This volume is set for release in Japan on September 10, 2025. Ahead of this release, the cover art for volume 14 has been revealed. The captivating cover showcases the female protagonist of the story, Vladilena Milizé, or Lena as she’s more commonly known. Since previous English versions have been released a year or so after the original, fans should anticipate a similar timeline. Yen Press, the official English licensor of the series, will announce the release date for the English version shortly.

For nearly a decade, the nation of San Magnolia has been engaged in conflict with the Giadian Empire’s self-governing Legion. Contrary to popular belief, the Juggernauts operated by the Republic are actually controlled by individuals known as the Eighty-Six, who belong to the marginalized Colorata community and have had their rights taken away by the Alba administration, leaving them in internment. Major Vladilena “Lena” Milizé, an aristocrat from Alba, takes on the role of Handler for the Spearhead Squadron, headed by Shinei “Undertaker” Nouzen. As Lena gets to know her squad, she begins to discover some harsh realities about the Republic and the hidden nature of the ongoing war.

In a captivating manner, Volume 14 skillfully built anticipation for upcoming conflicts in the final storyline. The collapse of the Republic’s frontlines mirrored the battlefield of the Eighty-Sixth Sector, trapping Shin and his team, due to mines set by their own comrades, preventing retreat. With the advancing Legion forces, they were unable to advance further. As Shin persisted in combat, aided by Lena from house arrest, events took a dramatic turn when Shin was captured by the enemy. The unexpected twist and progression are thrilling, promising an engaging final arc with unpredictable outcomes.

The upcoming 328-page book is likely not the final one, considering each arc typically spans about three volumes. Therefore, this arc might continue for 3 to 4 volumes. However, predicting its exact end date is challenging due to the unpredictable release schedule of the light novel. Previous releases have varied from as little as 3 months to over a year. Despite these scheduling inconsistencies, fans’ concerns about the story’s conclusion and its quality are generally low, given Asato’s excellent storytelling over an 8-year period.

The book we’re talking about probably won’t be the last one, since each arc usually consists of three volumes. This arc could potentially have 3 to 4 volumes. However, it’s hard to say exactly when it will end because the light novel’s release schedule is unpredictable – it can take anywhere from a few months to over a year. Despite this uncertainty in timing, fans are generally confident about the quality of the ending thanks to Asato’s strong storytelling abilities over the past 8 years.
