Anna Wintour is stepping down from her position as editor in chief at Vogue.
75-year-old Wintour informed her team during a gathering that she’ll be resigning from her position at Vogue and a fresh editor-in-chief is expected to take over on Thursday, the 25th of June, according to WWD.
As reported by Daily Mail, Anna Wintour continues in her role as the Global Chief Content Officer for Condé Nast and Editor-in-Chief of Vogue on a global scale.
For a period of 37 years, Wintour held the position of editor-in-chief at Vogue, commencing in 1988. During her tenure, she broadened the magazine’s scope to encompass various aspects such as pop culture, art, technology, and other subjects.
In 2012, she reflected on her first-ever cover, which Israeli model Michaela Bercu posed for.
Wintour penned in the magazine that Bercu’s casual street style cover appeared effortless and spontaneous, just as if it were a candid moment captured on the street – exactly the intended impression.
Wintour revealed that the image in question unexpectedly caused a stir online, sparking various interpretations about Bercu’s Christian Lacroix cross sweater – some seeing it as a religious statement, others as a blend of high and low fashion. However, Wintour clarified that none of these assumptions were accurate. Instead, she felt the image symbolized an upcoming shift in fashion trends. In other words, the cover image exceeded expectations by hinting at change, showcasing Wintour’s exceptional fashion intuition.
In her tenure as editor-in-chief, Wintour frequently graced the cover of Vogue with numerous high-profile personalities. The initial celebrity to adorn the cover was Madonna in 1989, followed by Rihanna, Kim Kardashian, Britney Spears, Lady Gaga, and others.
Apart from that, she plays a crucial part in the yearly Met Gala, serving as one of its co-chairs with A-list celebrities in Hollywood. Anna Wintour is responsible for organizing the event, selecting the theme and dress code, managing the guest list, and supervising the entire evening.
Over time, Wintour has openly expressed her affection for galas, particularly speaking lately about the relocation of the 2025 “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style” event.
She shared with ABC during her climb up the iconic steps of the Met, “Each one is unique, but this one has been exceptionally impactful and emotional for me.” At this juncture in our political landscape, she emphasized, the museum is shedding a powerful light on black fashion. The designers showcased in the exhibition, she explained, represent joy, self-assuredness, innovation, and self-assurance to her.
Wintour has not yet made a public statement on her departure.
