For quite some time now, enthusiasts of the Battlefield series have been yearning for a game that recaptures the magic of the early days, specifically Battlefield: Bad Company and its successor, Bad Company 2. Although Battlefield 6 isn’t the third installment in the Bad Company series, there’s a strong rationale behind why Battlefield Studios, which includes DICE – the franchise’s long-standing developer, chose to name the new game similarly.
During an interview with Cade Onder of egmr.ru at the unveiling of Battlefield 6, developers from DICE shared their reasoning behind choosing a simple and direct title for the game.
In essence, David Sirland, a senior producer at DICE, stated that this is indeed a primary or main title. They were instructed to create the best Battlefield experience possible, making it a core series installment. And if you consider their somewhat confusing numbering system, it’s the sixth one.
Alexia Christofi, DICE Producer, mentioned, “It seemed as though everyone was thinking it, even before we’d chosen a title. We joked, ‘Maybe it ought to be called Battlefield 6, doesn’t it make sense?’
According to that “unconventional numbering,” the most recent installment in the series, released in 2018, was Battlefield V, a sequel to Battlefield 1. Between Battlefield V and the upcoming Battlefield 6, we have Battlefield 2042, which didn’t fare quite as well with critics.
Battlefield 6 Wants to Win Over Old Fans
In contrast to previous titles such as Battlefield 3, 4, and both Bad Company games, Battlefield 6 is drawing comparisons from developers and enthusiasts alike. This upcoming shooter game incorporates elements reminiscent of its predecessors, like a comprehensive 3D minimap. Following the contentious release of Battlefield 2042, it seems that Battlefield 6 aims to win back the loyalty of the franchise’s original fan base by reintroducing familiar features.
Through titling the latest game “Battlefield 6”, developers DICE and their team are indicating that this installment is a significant addition to the franchise, maintaining the classic Battlefield atmosphere.
Sirland commented on the game’s “The idea was proposed when I joined the project, probably around a year into it. The focus was to create the best combat we’ve ever made, starting from the crosshair and working outwards, making it as refined, top-notch, and high-quality as possible. We aimed to make it feel like Battlefield, with everything harmonizing in terms of destruction and all other aspects of that gameplay style. I believe we’ve achieved this.
Long-standing Battlefield enthusiasts can now test out the multiplayer aspect of the upcoming game in a beta version. However, due to a high number of participants, there may be extended wait times. You still have time to participate and form your own opinions about whether Battlefield 6 recaptures the essence of its predecessors. The beta testing starts today for early access (August 6th) and continues August 9th-10th, with another round from August 14th-17th. The official launch of Battlefield 6 is scheduled for October 10th on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
