In 2025, moviegoers have witnessed some remarkable cinematic moments, yet none quite match the chaos of the climax in Weapons. The film reaches its peak as characters Justine (Julia Garner) and Archer (Josh Brolin) find themselves under attack by Paul (Alden Ehrenreich) and James (Austin Abrams), while young Alex (Cary Christopher) manages to evade his hypnotized parents. However, the situation takes a drastic turn when Alex successfully casts a spell, causing 17 children trapped in a basement to attack Aunt Gladys (Amy Madigan). This sudden event results in pandemonium and grandeur that leaves audiences in awe.
During our conversation at the LA press day for the movie “Weapons” last month, I couldn’t help but ask Zach Cregger about creating such a memorable scene where numerous children brutally break through windows, doors, and walls, leading to a horrifying outcome for Gladys. I was curious about how he managed to achieve this scene, which is undeniably destined to leave its mark in horror film history. Cregger shared that the key to pulling off this grandeur lies in meticulous preparation.
Wow, man, that scene was quite intense. You know, it took four days to film it, and there were seventeen children running through broken glass and performing all sorts of crazy actions. Each small detail required a lot of preparation. Preparation, as you might guess, is key in this case. It involved plenty of rehearsals, VFX rehearsals, stunt rehearsals, and more. Essentially, it was a lengthy process.

It’s easy to picture those kids on set, enjoying themselves immensely while filming the horror movie’s stunts (I would have relished the chance to knock down a row of pretend doors and windows when I was in third grade), but at the same time, I understand the immense difficulty of the production process. Anyone who has worked with children knows that managing 17 of them for a precise task can be quite challenging – and it becomes even more daunting when you consider that this task needs to be done repeatedly, with major adjustments needed after every single take.
Julia Garner visited the set to observe the chaos, and she was undoubtedly impressed by how everything coalesced. When I inquired about her thoughts on the children causing a ruckus following Aunt Gladys, she mentioned that there was a lot of tiredness present on set, but as soon as it was time to work, everyone became energized. The actress remarked:
It was awe-inspiring to behold the spectacle unfolding. Amidst several restarts and glitches, fatigue seemed to set in among everyone at various points during the night. However, as soon as all the children were back on screen, there was an immediate surge of energy and excitement. Everyone perked up, and the atmosphere transformed into something electrifying.
Making “Weapons” was a tremendous team effort, and everyone involved should take great pride in their contributions. However, the process had some unforeseen consequences. For instance, even after production wrapped up, Zach Cregger kept having nightmares about coordinating certain sequences. The filmmaker added, referring to these challenging experiences.
During a three-week span following the completion of filming, I found myself experiencing considerable stress. In my dreams, I was frequently transported back to the set, where I felt compelled to guide children through various obstacles, repeatedly urging them to focus and jump. It felt very real, but upon waking, I’d realize it was just a dream, as I had already completed filming the movie. Despite my efforts, I struggled to break free from this mental loop of managing children near windows.
In simpler terms, Zach Cregger’s distress is advantageous for us, as the conclusion of “Weapons” offers a unique and unforgettable cinematic adventure. The electric atmosphere that filled the theater during my screening, following Alex breaking the stick and aiming at Aunt Gladys, was truly palpable. The sight of children mindlessly rampaging is uproariously hilarious, but what’s even more satisfying is watching them dismantle Gladys – a moment where viewers find immense relief in seeing the mastermind behind nightmarish scenarios receive her deserved retribution.
The delight I experienced upon concluding “Weapons” serves as an exemplary reason for cinema-goers’ passion. Not only did it leave me ecstatic upon exiting the theater, but I eagerly anticipate revisiting it numerous times in the future, as the film solidifies its status as a contemporary genre masterpiece. Its uniqueness and exceptional outcome are a testament to the effort invested in its production.
