It’s common knowledge that Nolan strictly prohibits phones and smoking on his film sets, and he himself doesn’t own a smartphone. Yet, as Tom Holland shared in an interview with GQ, certain members of the crew are allowed to have their phones on set. He also mentioned this fact while discussing how he stayed updated on the score during a Europa League victory.
During filming Chris Nolan’s movie in Los Angeles, mobile phones were prohibited on set, leaving me uninformed about the score. To stay updated, I frequently approached discreet crew members who often had their phones and asked for news. During lunch break, I managed to sneak a peek at the game’s final 10 minutes in my trailer, returning to set brimming with enthusiasm. This led to an exceptional performance in a captivating scene, making for a truly enjoyable experience.
The actor portraying Spider-Man, known for his passion for football, especially Tottenham, was engaged in a conversation about their Europa League victory with a journalist. Given his fervor for the team, it’s understandable that he was putting considerable effort into determining the score despite being on a phone-free set.
Christopher Nolan is slated to direct a movie adaptation of The Odyssey, which is scheduled for release in theaters on July 17, 2026. Alongside Tom Holland, this epic production will also feature Matt Damon, Jon Bernthal, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Anne Hathaway, Charlize Theron, and several other talented actors.
It appears that the Marvel actor wasn’t carrying his personal device with him. Yet, he knew whom to approach for information. Fortunately, some team members had their phones and shared the details with him. Moreover, it seems that Nolan doesn’t strictly prohibit technology in his filmmaking, as Holland managed to watch the end of the match on his return to the trailer.
After they triumphed, he was able to rejoice by returning to work with no distractions from phones. Frankly, that sounds like an amazing day to me! If your favorite team clinched victory and you got cast as Telemachus in one of the most anticipated film adaptations on the 2026 movie lineup, I’d say that’s a truly wonderful time!
Speaking as a passionate cinephile here, I’ve got to say, Christopher Nolan might take it all in stride if fans watch his masterpieces on their phones, but that’s just the nature of things nowadays. However, when it comes to the set, strict rules are enforced, and those are rarely bent. But there are exceptions, as Tom Holland has shown us.
During a big sports game with your preferred team, you might need to take certain actions to influence the outcome, and I admire Holland’s determination for that. Moreover, I’m delighted that he managed to watch the game right until the end, even from his trailer.
Generally speaking, I believe going phone-free on set can be a genuine advantage. It likely reduces distractions, allowing actors and crew to become more engrossed in the storyline they’re creating. Given this, it’s no wonder that some directors, such as Christopher Nolan, choose to enforce it.
However, there are instances when internet access is essential, allowing you to seek updates from people with phones about events happening beyond the movie set.
