Fans of the popular Netflix series, “Stranger Things“, will bid farewell to their cherished supernatural show towards the end of this year. The Duffer Brothers’ creation has left an indelible mark on pop culture with its engaging narrative that caters to various age groups. The show serves up a dose of ’80s nostalgia for Gen X, Millennials, and even Baby Boomers, while also resonating with Gen Z due to its focus on a group of teenagers.
In addition to its gripping, suspenseful narrative, “Stranger Things” delves into the complex power struggles among its main characters, both heroes and villains. Yet, in this series, power isn’t limited to the psychokinetic abilities of certain characters or monsters. As we prepare for our final journey back to Hawkins and the Upside Down, let’s explore the seven most influential characters from “Stranger Things”.
7) Jim Hopper
Let’s begin with a character who doesn’t possess supernatural abilities, but is instead portrayed by David Harbour as Jim Hopper, Hawkins’ tough yet empathetic Chief of Police. Jim’s strength comes from personal tragedy and life experiences. The loss of his daughter Sara to cancer instills in him a fierce protection over the younger characters in Hawkins, as well as his romantic interest Joyce Byers. His military background as a Vietnam veteran and police training contribute significantly to making Jim one of the show’s strongest characters.
6) Joyce Byers
In the Stranger Things series, Joyce Byers, played by Winona Ryder, serves as a significant character, particularly as the mother of one of the key younger characters, Will Byers. Much like Chief Hopper, Joyce doesn’t have supernatural abilities, but her influence is undeniable. She exhibits a fierce maternal instinct, similar to a mama bear, with an unwavering determination to safeguard her son throughout Season 1 that propels the narrative forward. It’s this relentless drive that makes Joyce a powerful figure in the story. 5) The Demogorgon
As a true fan of cinematic masterpieces, let me share my thoughts on the terrifying creatures from Stranger Things. The Demogorgon, undoubtedly the show’s most recognizable monster, is the king of its twisted realm, much like a bear is in our own world. Just as bears are feared for their lightning speed and formidable strength, the Demogorgon stalks its prey with a similar ferocity.
Unlike bears, however, the Demogorgon doesn’t use mind control to manipulate its victims. Instead, it instills pure terror in the hearts of our beloved characters throughout the series. In Season 1, it snatches Will Byers away from his terrified family. Later on, we see it morph into terrifying creatures like the Demodogs, causing even more chaos and fear.
And let’s not forget the heart-stopping encounters Joyce and Hopper have with this beast at the start of Season 4. It’s a testament to the show’s ability to keep us on the edge of our seats!
4) Eight (Kali)
Grown up within Hawkins Lab together with Eleven (Jane Hopper), a key character, Eight, portrayed by Linnea Berthelsen, exhibits psychokinetic abilities. Unlike Eleven’s telekinetic powers, Eight’s skills lie in creating illusions that can manipulate people’s minds to perceive things that aren’t actually there. Kali makes her appearance in Season 2, and many fans are eagerly hoping for her return in the concluding season.
3) The Mind Flayer
In simpler terms, we’re talking about an ancient, otherworldly entity known as The Mind Flayer, which is akin to something from the Upside Down realm. This entity has the ability to take control of people and creatures not only from its own dimension but also others. Moreover, it seems to manipulate weather patterns and influence the world’s environment. In essence, The Mind Flayer serves as the collective consciousness of the Upside Down. It played a significant role in Seasons 2 and 3, and given its powerful connections to the Upside Down, there’s a strong possibility that it could reappear prominently in the final season.
2) Vecna/Henry Creel/One
In the world of “Stranger Things,” The Mind Flayer is intimately linked with the second most powerful character, who is known by various names, much like a classic antagonist. Originally named Henry Creel, his early life was far from human as he utilized his psychic abilities to murder his sister and mother. Subsequently, within Hawkins Lab, he was designated as Subject 001, also referred to simply as “One.
In the world of Stranger Things, I found myself transformed into the terrifying entity known as Vecna, once known as Henry Creel or One. This transformation occurred when Eleven banished me to a twisted realm called the Upside Down. From this dark dimension, I began controlling creatures such as the Mind Flayer, wreaking havoc in Hawkins and beyond.
In the fourth season, it was revealed that I, Vecna, would serve as the primary antagonist of the series. This revelation sets the stage for an epic confrontation in the final season, where I will undoubtedly test the bonds of our beloved characters to their limits.
1) Eleven (Jane Hopper)
11, or Jane Hooper (adopted by Jim), is the series’ miracle worker. Her abilities are diverse and increase dramatically as the story unfolds. These psychokinetic powers enable her to move objects with her mind, navigate between dimensions, including the Upside Down, and seal interdimensional rifts. She has successfully vanquished both the Demogorgon and the Mind Flayer.
In the lab of Hawkins, the character Eleven is emotionally traumatized due to past events and initially finds it difficult to utilize her abilities. However, when she starts bleeding from her nose, it signifies a strong emotional outburst or intense use of her powers. Over time, Eleven assumes the position of the most powerful character in “Stranger Things”.
In the upcoming conclusion of “Stranger Things,” it’s clear that the two dominant characters, Eleven and Vecna, are poised for a showdown. While Eleven was unaware, her action of sending Henry Creel to the Upside Down has caused all the troubles in Hawkins. Eager to bring an end to the Upside Down and its terrifying creatures’ rule, Eleven is determined to take action in the fifth and final season of “Stranger Things.
