In 2014, Shueisha’s digital magazine, Shonen Jump+, quickly rose to become one of the industry’s leading publications, thanks in part to popular series like Fire Punch, Chainsaw Man, Hell’s Paradise, Spy × Family, Kaiju No. 8, and Dandadan. However, not all series have enjoyed the same level of success, with some even being cancelled due to falling short of expectations over time.
The manga Wild Strawberry by Ire Yonemoto is set to reach its conclusion in Chapter 50 this month, while Jin no Me by Matsuto will wrap up entirely in August 2025. Wild Strawberry initially garnered significant attention but struggled with sales. There have been rumors that the manga was being cancelled after releasing 50 chapters, but no official announcement has been made on the matter yet.
The series we’ve been following has come to its natural end, effectively quelling any ongoing speculation. However, “Jin no Me” by Matsuto, although serialized, remains unavailable for local readers with little trace worldwide. It seems to be the author’s sole work and is set to conclude with Chapter 122 this month. Updates on both series have been provided through the releases of new chapters from Shonen Jump+, yet as we’re barely halfway through this month, Shonen Jump+ has already ended or will end at least six manga. Unfortunately, global fans can only access a tiny portion of what’s been published in Japan.
What Is Wild Strawberry About?
In an upcoming era, the narrative centers around siblings Kingo and Kayano, who were raised together in an orphanage before being adopted by a caring family. As it turns out, they are not ordinary humans, but Jinka – strange, plant-like beings capable of consuming people and disguising themselves as humans. A horrifying encounter nearly claimed Kingo’s life, but Kayano, in a dramatic twist, transformed into a Jinka and saved him. Since then, the duo has lived covertly to avoid detection, but their secret identity is now exposed.
Because Jinkas pose a significant danger, there’s a unique group known as the Flower Funeral Force whose role is to eliminate any such beings immediately. The siblings continue to battle for survival, and this time, Kayano sacrifices herself to protect Kingo by merging with him. However, there’s a method to save Kayano, but Kingo can only implement it by discovering the truth about the enigmatic occurrence that gave rise to the Jinkas.
Shonen Jump Series are Getting Shorter By the Day
The prolonged reigns of popular manga series like One Piece, Naruto, and Bleach are gradually diminishing, making way for shorter, more action-packed series. With digitalization expanding globally, competition among manga series is fierce. If a series doesn’t garner interest within the first 30 to 50 chapters, it often gets discontinued. This compresses the timeline for story development as the primary focus is capturing readers’ attention swiftly and keeping them engaged right from the start.
In a shift from traditional methods, creators are now deciding the conclusions during the early stages itself for many popular series like “Demon Slayer” and “Jujutsu Kaisen”. These series didn’t reach the 300-chapter mark, but this isn’t necessarily negative considering the combined sales of hundreds of millions of copies. Crafting manga on a weekly or monthly basis is extremely demanding, often leading to health issues in mangakas. The emerging trend of short-lived series provides creators with the opportunity to focus on one project at a time, take necessary breaks before brainstorming for the next, and then repeat this cycle.
