As a die-hard movie enthusiast, let me share my thoughts on Marvel’s Jessica Jones series, which made its debut on Netflix and breathed life into this intriguing character in an indelible way. The adaptation brilliantly captured Jessica’s tough-as-nails private investigator persona, delving deep into her personal emotional chaos and torment.
Rumors are swirling that Jessica Jones will be reprising her role in Daredevil: Born Again season 2, marking her official entrance into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) lore. This news has fans buzzing about what the series did right – and wrong.
Jessica Jones certainly got many things spot-on, such as introducing us to the chilling menace of the Purple Man. However, there was one significant issue that left a sour note for most viewers: Patsy Walker.
Initially, Patsy Walker’s character wasn’t starkly dissimilar in Marvel’s universe, but her transformation into Hellcat deviated significantly from her comic book persona. Fans of Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) are often content with changes, as they typically adapt characters and stories to suit this distinct world. However, certain alterations have fallen short, to put it mildly. Today, we’ll discuss the missteps in Patsy’s character development, also known as Trish Walker or Hellcat.
Marvel Comics’ Hellcat
Patricia “Patsy” Walker has a rich background in Marvel Comics, which is one of the reasons fans adore her. Having grown up with a passion for comic books and superheroes, it’s no wonder she aspired to emulate them. Her big break came when she crossed paths with Hank McCoy, better known as the Beast. Charm personified, Patsy managed to persuade the Beast into aiding her in acquiring her own extraordinary abilities.
The truth is, the solution wasn’t straightforward. Although Patsy managed to acquire the powers she yearned for, it wasn’t just from a single source. She gained her abilities through various means such as a special suit, psychic upgrades, and an extended stay within Mephisto’s domain (living in the Marvel universe isn’t simple).
In the world of comics, Patsy Walker, also known as Hellcat, is renowned for various aspects. She shares a celebrity-like background with her live-action version, although their life journeys diverge somewhat. She possesses remarkable agility, retractable claws, and psychic abilities. Moreover, she’s known for her unwavering optimism, intelligence, and supportive nature. Hellcat is the type of character who never succumbs to adversity, no matter how challenging the circumstances may be. While she’s had her fair share of romantic complications, she has shown resilience in leaving past relationships behind when necessary.
Trish Walker As Seen In Jessica Jones
In the television series Jessica Jones, the character Trish Walker deviates somewhat from her original version. Her backstory is modified as well, presenting both advantages and disadvantages. The portrayal skillfully establishes a strong bond between Trish and Jessica, where they lived together during their teenage years and essentially grew up like sisters. This aspect was tastefully done, and it’s not our intention to dispute its effectiveness. Trish functioned as a reliable support for Jessica, but from the start, it was evident that she harbored envy towards Jessica’s powers.
Similar to her comic book persona, she was a teenage celebrity who managed to maintain her fame. This led her to take up a role as a talk show host, which often involved assisting Jess in solving mysteries. However, during the second season, things took an unexpected turn, and this is where fans of Hellcat may feel some frustration.
An Ongoing Obsession With Power
It’s quite evident that Trish Walker has a strong hunger for power, and it doesn’t require much observation to notice this. This characteristic is reminiscent of her comic book counterpart, but in the show, it seems more subtle yet insidious from the very start. Trish’s desire for power influences her friendship with Jessica, as she finds herself drawn to Jessica’s abilities initially. In the second season, Trish identifies Dr. Malus as the key to achieving her dreams.
In the series, I find myself persuading Dr. Malus to conduct an experimental treatment on me, which grants me extraordinary abilities. This isn’t overly extreme when considering my origins in the Marvel universe. However, it becomes evident that this newfound power comes at a steep cost. Consequently, I find myself treading a darker path, gradually crossing boundaries from being a vigilante to potentially becoming a supervillain.
It’s clear why certain aspects of Hellcat’s story needed alteration. Given Jessica Jones’ busy schedule, it was impractical for her to follow Trish’s comic book journey towards power. However, the issue arises when they decided to use this newfound power to corrupt a character who is generally known for her kindness and support. This shift in character was not only unexpected but also questionable, as it led her to a point where she was willing to harm her best friend’s mother – regardless of her motives. This change starkly contrasted with Trish’s previously positive and supportive nature.
