An Underrated DreamWorks Movie Is Finally Back on Netflix

A DreamWorks film from 2010 that didn’t receive much attention initially is now streaming on Netflix again, having been previously exclusive to HBO Max and Amazon Prime Video. The duration for which this movie will be available on Netflix is uncertain. Despite not being one of DreamWorks’ most renowned or viewed films, over time it has garnered a devoted fanbase and recognition as an underappreciated gem within their collection.

During the mid-2000s to early 2010s, DreamWorks Animation Studio undoubtedly shone brightest, producing a string of successful films that left a lasting impression on audiences worldwide. In this golden age, they unleashed masterpieces such as “Shrek 2,” “Shrek The Third,” and “Shrek Forever After,” along with “Madagascar” and its sequel “Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa.” Additionally, they brought us the “How to Train a Dragon” series, including its first and second installments. The studio also released “Kung Fu Panda” and its sequel during this period, as well as “Puss in Boots.” Notably, between 2004 and 2011, DreamWorks put out eight of their top ten highest-grossing films ever, with the remaining two being released in 2012 and 2013. This was indeed DreamWorks Animation operating at the height of its powers.

During that period, one movie didn’t quite achieve the same level of success and cultural impact, and that was Megamind released in 2010. Over time, particularly through internet memes, Megamind has garnered a cherished yet underestimated status. However, in 2010, it received mixed reviews. It scored a 73/72 on Rotten Tomatoes and grossed $321.9 million at the box office. While the latter figure is impressive, the former isn’t too shabby either. Yet, when compared to DreamWorks’ productions during that era, it was relatively less impactful in terms of both critical acclaim and commercial success. Nevertheless, it performed well enough to inspire a multi-platform franchise, which includes a sequel scheduled for 2024 titled Megamind vs. the Doom Syndicate.

If you haven’t yet watched Megamind, here’s your chance if you have a Netflix subscription in 2025. The 96-minute film directed by Tom McGrath is definitely worth a watch. Despite the disappointing sequel, Megamind vs. the Doom Syndicate, which may have left a sour taste for some, it does not reflect the quality of the original. In fact, the original Megamind stands on its own as an excellent movie.

In the movie titled “Megamind,” we delve into the life of this alien supervillain with extraordinary intelligence named Megamind. Following his victory over his long-time foe, Metro Man, Megamind tries to manufacture a brand new, even more potent hero to serve as his future adversary. Unfortunately, he inadvertently creates an even more formidable villain instead, which leads him to assume the role of the hero in this tale.

In the same vein as Dreamworks’ other films, Megamind features a well-known ensemble of popular Hollywood actors. Among them are Tina Fey, Jonah Hill, Brad Pitt, David Cross, and Will Ferrell, who voices Megamind in the movie.
