Chad Michael Murray Lost Nearly Half His Blood Due to Health Scare

Chad Michael Murray suffered a near death experience—but it may have landed him in Hollywood.

Reflecting on his early days as an actor, the star of One Tree Hill recalled that the path wasn’t a walk in the park at all. In truth, he divulged that he came perilously close to meeting an untimely end during that time.

Chad shared during a podcast interview on August 8 that he spent a considerable amount of time in hospitals due to an incident when he was fifteen. Specifically, his intestines became twisted, leading to a hospital stay lasting approximately two and a half months.

“I had internal bleeding,” he continued. “I lost 50 percent of my blood. I was on my deathbed.”

As a lifestyle aficionado, I can tell you that even though certain events may have left me momentarily disoriented, there were distinct instances that lingered in my memory.

He said, “I fluctuated between being fully awake and unconscious, so I had vivid dreams instead.” All he can recall is catching glimpses of his father looking more frail than ever before, and a priest standing by his bedside discussing final blessings and suchlike.

Fortunately, following a blood transfusion administered by his nurse, the 43-year-old managed to recover, expressing gratitude that she had effectively “saved his life.

It turns out, his nurses may have played a part in kickstarting his career as well.

Chad joked, “The other nurse I had was like a model – it’s what every 15-year-old boy dreams about.” He then shared that the nurse had said to him, “Wow, you should consider modeling.

He stated, “I expressed my reluctance towards modeling,” he added. “‘Instead, I aspire to act. I am passionate about movies and TV series. I wish to share this talent with others.’ To which she replied, ‘You can transition from modeling into acting smoothly. By the way, when you leave here, I’ll introduce you to a modeling agency I know.'” And it was clear that she intended to keep her promise.

Shortly thereafter, she led him to an acting audition at a modeling event in Orlando, which he unexpectedly discovered. From that point onwards, things took a historic turn.

However, aside from his professional life, the former Gilmore Girls cast member reflected on some crucial lessons he picked up during his hospital stay.

Beyond his career achievements, the ex-Gilmore Girls actor found himself taking away significant lessons from his time spent in the hospital.

He revealed that he began a strong bond with both God and his father, who was particularly close due to their shared journey. His father, a solitary figure raising five children, made daily trips to the hospital and sacrificed countless nights with him despite having four other kids at home.

Despite the internet not always being a compassionate space, Amy Schumer is grateful that it provided her with valuable insights in this particular situation.

Recalling an episode of Call Her Daddy from January 2025, Amy said, “After going through a lot of media interviews, I remember thinking, ‘Alright everyone, calm down,’ but then doctors started commenting and suggested that something might be wrong.”

Amy was shocked when these doctors suspected she had Cushing syndrome, which they believed could be due to elevated cortisol levels or steroid injections. It was then that Amy realized, “I’ve been receiving steroid injections for my scars.”

“I’ve had a breast reduction and a C-section, among other procedures, so I was getting these steroid injections,” Amy explained. “This condition, called Cushing syndrome, I wouldn’t have known about if the internet hadn’t been so critical of me.”

Now, Amy is simply relieved that she’s well. As she wrote in a February 2024 News Not Noise newsletter, “Learning that I have a type of Cushing that will eventually correct itself and that I am healthy was the best possible news.

In March 2022, Hailey Bieber, the co-founder of Rhode skincare, experienced a terrifying incident while having breakfast with her husband Justin Bieber. She began exhibiting symptoms similar to a stroke, causing her speech to become slurred and her face to droop on one side. When Justin asked if she was alright, Hailey couldn’t respond, prompting him to seek immediate medical attention.

At the hospital, doctors discovered that Hailey had suffered a small blood clot in her brain, known as a Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA). Further investigation revealed that she had a hole in her heart called patent foramen ovale (PFO), which allowed the blood clot to travel from her heart to her brain.

After undergoing a successful PFO closure procedure, Hailey reported feeling well again.

In the same year that Hailey underwent a health crisis, Justin Bieber also encountered a similar health issue. Specifically, in June 2022, the “Baby” singer revealed that he was diagnosed with Ramsay Hunt syndrome, a condition that caused temporary facial paralysis and led to the cancellation of the rest of his Justice World Tour. In an Instagram video, Justin explained, “This eye is not blinking. I can’t smile on this side of my face. This nostril will not move. So, there’s full paralysis on this side of my face.” He also mentioned that it had become increasingly difficult for him to eat. However, the paralysis eventually subsided. On a June 2022 episode of Good Morning America, Hailey shared that Justin was doing well and feeling much better after the ordeal.

One day in Atlanta, he complained of a severe headache and asked for an aspirin, but before he could get it, he fainted. When he came to consciousness, he discovered he had been unconscious for 20 days.

Initially, a doctor gave him a cortisone shot and sent him home. His sister, Deidra Dixon, then drove him to another hospital, where they diagnosed him with a brain hemorrhage that caused a stroke. After undergoing surgery on the 20th day, Foxx woke up May 4 in a wheelchair, unable to walk. He was subsequently sent to Chicago for rehabilitation and therapy.

“All I can say is that I am grateful for every prayer,” he said, “because I needed every one of them.

Emilia Clarke, who is known for her role in Game of Thrones, penned an essay titled “A Battle for My Life” in 2019. The actress described a frightening incident at the gym where she suffered a severe headache, vomited profusely, and experienced increasingly intense pain. She believed her brain was injured.

Subsequently, she was rushed to the hospital for a scan. The diagnosis was grim: she had a subarachnoid hemorrhage, a potentially fatal type of stroke caused by bleeding in the space surrounding the brain. Emilia explained that she had an aneurysm, a rupture in an artery.

She underwent immediate surgery to seal the aneurysm, describing the pain as excruciating. During her recovery, she experienced aphasia and spoke gibberish. A week later, the aphasia subsided, and she was discharged from the hospital after a month’s stay.

However, in 2013, during a routine brain scan, it was discovered that the growth had doubled in size, necessitating another surgery. She recounted waking up after the procedure in agony, as the operation had failed and another major bleed had occurred. The doctors informed her that her chances of survival were slim if they didn’t operate again. This time, they accessed her brain through her skull.

Fortunately, she is now reportedly in perfect health.

Currently, Cori is recovering well. She added, “I’m doing great now. I just had to work on some motor skills, but other than that, I was fine.

This prolonged period was marked by various diagnoses from different doctors. Despite these challenges, Shailene, who has a holistic background and studies herbalism, sought solutions from both mainstream medical professionals and independent healers.

This journey lasted for approximately ten years and led to additional difficulties such as fear of food due to stomach issues, body dysmorphia, confusion about identity, and feelings of insecurity and uncertainty about her own self. However, after addressing both her physical and mental health concerns, Shailene is now feeling much better and can happily report that she’s in good health.
