It seems like audiences will have to wait a bit longer to revisit Shrek’s swamp, as the release of Shrek 5 has been postponed from December 2026 to June 30, 2027. Universal and DreamWorks Animation made this announcement on Monday. The reason behind the delay is not yet clear, but it could be due to the success that rival studios have experienced with their animated films during summer months when children are out of school. Additionally, the release date for Avengers: Doomsday has also been moved to December 18th, 2026.
As DreamWorks delays the release of “Shrek 5”, Universal Studios has decided to shift the release date for their upcoming film “Illumination’s Untitled Event Film”. Originally scheduled for a late June release in 2027, the new release date is now April 16, 2027. The fifth Shrek movie, which will be released seventeen years after “Shrek Forever After” and twenty-six years since the franchise’s debut, draws inspiration from classic fairytales featuring an ogre named Shrek and a group of fairytale characters. The first Shrek film was a box office success, earning $484.94 million globally on a budget of approximately $60 million.
The Shrek series continued with four films: Shrek 2 in 2004, Shrek the Third in 2007, and Shrek Forever After in 2010. The second installment was a massive hit, grossing approximately $929 million globally, more than double the first film’s earnings. However, the third and fourth movies saw slightly lower box office returns with around $808.3 million and $752 million worldwide, respectively. Despite this minor dip, the franchise’s popularity endured, leading to two spin-off films: Puss in Boots in 2011 and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish in 2022. The initial Puss in Boots movie earned a respectable $554.9 million worldwide, while the second film garnered around $480.4 million globally.
The Shrek series, known for its films, has also created some television specials such as “Shrek the Halls” and “Scared Shrekless”. The franchise continued its storytelling on TV with the series “Puss in Boots: The Legend of Puss in Boots”. Even after almost three decades, the Shrek series remains popular. However, the release date of Shrek 5 will put the animated film up against box office competition as Sony’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is scheduled to arrive a week before Shrek 5.
In the upcoming movie titled “Shrek 5”, original actors Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz will reprise their roles as Shrek, Donkey, and Fiona respectively, set in the magical world of Far, Far Away. The new addition to the voice cast is the popular actress Zendaya, who will portray Shrek and Fiona’s daughter, Felicia. Directed by veterans Conrad Vernon and Walt Dohrn from a script penned by Michael McCullers, “Shrek 5” is scheduled for release on June 30, 2027. In the meantime, fans can enjoy streaming the Shrek movies on Peacock.
