In August 2015, American cinema didn’t quite shine as brightly as it could have. Marielle Heller’s impressive directorial debut, “The Diary of a Teenage Girl,” Joel Edgerton’s “The Gift” provided a chilling thrill, and Noah Baumbach’s “Mistress America” showcased Greta Gerwig’s hilarious comedy skills that would later be evident in “Barbie.” Unfortunately, the majority of other releases were merely average or easily forgettable.
Agent 47,” which sadly marked the end of a video game movie franchise after only two films.
What Exactly Was Hitman: Agent 47?
In 2000, the video game series known as Hitman began, gaining significant popularity over the years and remaining relevant in contemporary pop culture, with recent installments like Hitman 3 (2021). The film adaptation of this game, titled Hitman (2007), was produced and released by 20th Century Fox, featuring Timothy Olyphant as Agent 47. Nearly a decade later, another film titled Hitman: Agent 47 (2015) was made, with Rupert Friend portraying the iconic character Agent 47.
In his directorial career so far, Aleksander Bach has only directed one full-length movie – this action film – which isn’t shocking considering the overwhelmingly negative reception of ‘Hitman: Agent 47’. One of the most panned movies of 2015, ‘Hitman: Agent 47’ was heavily criticized for its lackluster action sequences and unimpressive visuals in the gunfight scenes. Critics and viewers alike lambasted the film for its dull dialogue during character-centric parts as well.
The movie, Hitman: Agent 47, faced significant criticism from long-term fans of the Hitman game. Although it included some references aimed at satisfying this audience, they felt it strayed too far from the original stealth-focused experience. As a result, neither the hardcore Hitman fans nor general action movie enthusiasts found it appealing. The film failed to generate enough intrigue even among bad movie aficionados, unlike the 2025 War of the Worlds remake. Instead, it was just a dull rehash of the familiar IP that quickly faded from both cinemas and people’s minds.
The Long-Term Fallout of Hitman: Agent 47
The movie ‘Hitman: Agent 47’ made just $22.5 million domestically, indicating that it was a flop and unlikely to spawn any more films within the franchise. It’s surprising that the initial film from 2007, which didn’t perform well at the box office, even received a reboot after eight years. Given ‘Agent 47”s poor financial performance, it had no chance of being extended or re-released. There were once plans to reboot the ‘Hitman’ property for a TV show on Hulu, but there’s been little to no progress on that project in almost a decade.
The portrayal of Agent 47 in the live-action Hitman material seemed to squash any remaining excitement for such productions among audiences. However, surprisingly, things have improved artistically for Rupert Friend, who played Agent 47, post-release. Despite being a breakout role on Homeland and the highest-profile film role yet for the British actor, the underperformance of Hitman didn’t deter him from securing other intriguing roles. On the contrary, the failure of Hitman paved the way for Friend to focus on non-blockbuster projects (with the exception of Jurassic World: Dominion), which have been beneficial for his career. Furthermore, Rupert Friend even joined Wes Anderson’s acting ensemble, opening up new opportunities for him in the industry. Essentially, the end of the Hitman franchise provided a fresh start and led to other captivating prospects for Rupert Friend.
Agent 47″ in the mid-2010s. This period wasn’t kind to movies based on video games, as seen with the poor reception and financial failure of films like Warcraft (2016) and Assassin’s Creed (2016). The demise of the Hitman movie series after only two films is consistent with the creative struggles that were common in cinema during this time. Even a generous release date wouldn’t have saved a movie like Hitman: Agent 47 from ending its franchise due to its lukewarm reception.
Hitman: Agent 47 is now streaming on Hulu.
