As a movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share some exciting news with fellow Paramount+ subscribers! One of the most chilling horror movies from the ’90s has made its way onto our streaming service. This decade marked a significant shift for horror, moving away from the excessive violence and gore that dominated in the late ’70s and early ’80s. Instead, we saw a rise of self-referential horror, with films like Wes Craven’s New Nightmare and the cult classic Scream leading the charge.
The closing years of the decade even gave birth to the found footage genre, thanks to The Blair Witch Project, and Japanese horror, such as The Ring/Ringu, gained popularity in the U.S. As we delve into this era of fear, I can’t help but feel a nostalgic chill down my spine!
Even though horror movies have evolved over time, they haven’t lost their ability to be frightening, as demonstrated by some examples mentioned earlier. A compelling illustration of this is the show “Event Horizon,” which became available on Paramount+ on August 1st, 2025. Directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, this Sci-Fi horror film depicts a crew of astronauts in 2047 embarking on a rescue mission aboard the titular “Event Horizon” ship. Released in 1997, it can be seen as a tribute to movies from the 70s and 80s, but its throwback style has proven to be quite effective.
Why You Should Watch Event Horizon
Event Horizon, directed by Anderson, stands out as his finest work. While it shares elements with films like Alien, Aliens and even The Shining, when executed skillfully, these similarities can create immense excitement and terror. And let me emphasize, despite initial negative reviews, Event Horizon is indeed executed skillfully (and has since gained a cult following). What lingers in your mind after streaming it are the truly disturbing visuals that Anderson paints on screen. They are graphic and gruesome, yes, but they also evoke the stuff of nightmares – a horrifying inferno etched into your memory and among the most chilling images in any horror film to date.
Apart from the storyline, it’s important to note that the talented cast of the film significantly contributes to its success. Director Anderson skillfully gathers a stellar team, with Lawrence Fishburne portraying Captain Miller. Accompanying him are actors such as Sam Neill, Kathleen Quinlan, Joely Richardson, Richard T. Jones, and even a young Jason Isaacs before his role in Harry Potter. Fishburne delivers an impressive performance, balancing both seriousness and charm in the lead role. The chemistry among the team is another strength of this movie, as it’s crucial to develop empathy for them, particularly when things take a turn for the worse.
I must confess that the film doesn’t consistently meet its grand aspirations, as it endeavors to blend Sci-Fi horror with profound theological explorations, even venturing into the literal depiction of Hell. It may stumble in striking this balance, but the fact that it aims for something beyond a typical horror flick deserves praise. Despite some thematic inconsistencies, the narrative never slows down significantly. The movie maintains a brisk pace and, with a runtime of only 96 minutes, it’s conveniently brief, making it an ideal choice for a weeknight viewing.
