I’m really looking forward to the buzz surrounding “Avengers: Doomsday” because it marks Robert Downey Jr.’s return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but with a twist! Instead of reprising his iconic role as Iron Man, he’ll be portraying the villainous Doctor Doom for the first time on the big screen since 2015. Interestingly, it’s not just Downey Jr. who gets another shot at donning a costume in a comic book movie. Some of the actors from Fox’s initial X-Men films are also set to make an appearance in “Doomsday”, including Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellan, Kelsey Grammer, and James Marsden.
A lesser-known mutant who’s keeping a low profile is Nightcrawler, portrayed by Alan Cumming. Although he was a key figure in X2: X-Men United, Nightcrawler didn’t reappear in X-Men: The Last Stand. However, Cumming is eager to make another appearance, expressing his enthusiasm about joining Doomsday. Unfortunately, the actor may have revealed too much, as he posted an image that might give away his character’s updated appearance in the MCU.

Apart from sharing a picture of a tooth arrangement, Cumming also displayed what seems like a cardboard box adorned with intriguing images related to the Doomsday set. Beside the term “trash” is an illustration of Nightcrawler, a character from Marvel Comics, and next to “Confidential” is another depiction of the same character, which looks similar to Cumming.
In the film X2, Nightcrawler is depicted wearing a trench coat and long pants instead of his comic book-accurate suit. According to a recent post by Cumming, it seems the Marvel Cinematic Universe might be adopting a different style for the character, potentially outfitting him in his classic red and black suit. If this change occurs, it could mean a return to the more lighthearted, campy aspects of the X-Men franchise that have yet to be fully explored.
Avengers: Doomsday Could Be Giving the Original X-Men Cast a Chance to Escape Black Leather
It’s well-known that the initial X-Men films produced by Fox intentionally distanced themselves from their comic book origins. Even a joke was made about Wolverine being uncomfortable in his costume, with Cyclops remarking, “Would you rather have yellow spandex?” Later movies relaxed this somewhat, allowing mutants to wear more vibrant costumes, but still, Fox strove to keep things grounded and less like traditional comic books. In contrast, the MCU leans heavily into its comic book roots, which could suggest that the X-Men are in for a lot of excitement in Doomsday.
It’s likely that Professor X will reappear in his yellow chair in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film in 2026, given that he was featured with it in “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.” Additionally, Cyclops might incorporate some yellow into his attire if his new outfit is inspired by his appearance from the X-Men ’97 series. Regardless of the costumes chosen for the mutant team in the MCU, let’s hope they move away from the outdated black leather style that was no longer fashionable even before the characters stopped wearing it.
Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on December 18, 2026.
