Bob Odenkirk Thinks Nobody Will Be More Than a Trilogy (& for Good Reason)

As a die-hard movie enthusiast, I’m beyond excited about the upcoming release of “Nobody 2,” the long-awaited sequel to last year’s action sensation. In a recent chat with ComicBook for a sneak peek into “Nobody 2” (hitting theaters August 15th), our fearless star, Bob Odenkirk, shared some intriguing insights about the series’ future. He’s convinced that there’s still plenty of mileage left in the “Nobody” franchise and isn’t planning to hang up his action-hero boots anytime soon, especially after a potential third installment.

What makes this franchise so captivating for Odenkirk is its family-oriented dynamic, which he finds irresistible. He envisions revisiting these characters at different points in their lives and exploring how they’ve evolved over the years between films. It sounds like we can look forward to many more thrilling adventures with this unforgettable cast!

As a movie enthusiast, I’d like to share my thoughts on this fascinating series. In essence, it spans across four films, each one capturing the growth of our young protagonists over four years. The second film you’ve seen is a testament to that progression. Interestingly, we used the same talented actors, Paisley Cadorath and Gage Munroe, to portray my on-screen children in all movies. Their performances are simply outstanding! What I appreciate most about this project is the authenticity of watching these characters evolve and navigate through various stages of their lives, including a developing marriage.

Released in March 2021, the initial movie “Nobody” managed to thrive despite debuting during the early stages of theater recovery post-pandemic. It earned $57.5 million globally on a production budget of $16 million. With a favorable response from critics (an 84% score on Rotten Tomatoes), “Nobody” proved substantial enough to encourage Universal to pursue a sequel.

In the trailers for the upcoming movie “Nobody 2,” Bob Odenkirk’s character Hutch and his family plan a relaxing vacation as a break. However, their tranquil getaway is disrupted when Hutch stumbles upon a sinister criminal plot in a quaint town. The film appears to deliver numerous intense action scenes, mirroring the style of its first installment. For this sequel, Timo Tjahjanto – a highly acclaimed action director known for his innovative approach – takes the helm, infusing the franchise with his distinctive flair.

Employing a popular action film series to delve into evolving family relationships could make for an engaging experience, as suggested by the marketing materials of “Nobody 2“. In this installment, it seems Hutch is grappling with improving his relationship with his children, given his frequent absences due to work commitments. This theme can be creatively adapted in subsequent films, providing a strong emotional foundation for each story. As Hutch’s children mature, their feelings and needs will evolve, necessitating changes within Hutch if he wishes to maintain a close bond with them. The lengthy gaps between sequels also reduce the risk of rehashing old ground. As Bob Odenkirk puts it, each film can showcase the characters at different stages in their lives. Since Munroe is 26 years old, maybe in “Nobody 3“, Hutch’s son Brady will be pursuing an opportunity to work alongside his father.

It’s clear that as of now, “Nobody 3” hasn’t been officially approved yet. This decision is likely contingent on how well “Nobody 2” performs at the box office. Given that it doesn’t have much direct competition, it has a good chance of matching or even surpassing the success of its predecessor. The timing for its release in mid-August seems ideal: by this point, most major studio blockbusters from the summer season would have already made their impact, and the top films from the previous weekend, “Weapons” and “Freakier Friday,” cater to different audiences. If action enthusiasts show up en masse for “Nobody 2,” there’s a good chance that more sequels could follow in the series.
