Alyson Stoner and Demi Lovato’s friendship wasn’t always as carefree as summer camp.
In their recently published memoir titled “Semi-Well-Adjusted Despite Literally Everything“, dated August 12th, Alyson shares her personal experiences and insights about working with Demi during the Disney Channel’s Camp Rock project.
For several years, I’ve struggled under Demi’s influence and been fearful of her PR team. I was also concerned by the harsh comments from her fans, as well as how the media exaggerated and perpetuated an inaccurate image of her.
I experienced a prolonged period of feeling oppressed by Demi’s authority and anxious about her PR group. The aggressive remarks from her supporters, coupled with the media’s distortion of reality, contributed to this sensation as well.
As a die-hard fan, I’ve always admired Demi Lovato’s talent and strength. Alyson shared that during the Camp Rock days, we all, including Demi, experienced tough times. One of those challenging periods was when she joined the Jonas Brothers on their Jonas Brothers: Live in Concert tour. Her openness about her sobriety journey over the years only adds to my respect for her resilience.
Alyson noted that Demi’s emotions fluctuated wildly, moving from joyful to angry to downcast. Her stern gaze and sharp tone, which she once used humorously to mimic Regina George from Mean Girls, seemed to have become permanent traits.
TopMob News has reached out to Demi’s rep for comment.
In his post, the actor from Cheaper by the Dozen explained that during the tour, the whole team had to bow down, understanding that at any moment, she might vent her emotions upon us, making us potential targets. At sixteen, being compelled to yield to her power games was puzzling. She would lash out verbally backstage, and then we’d go onstage for a sound check meet-and-greet, publicly showing respect to her position.
In their role as part of Demi’s concert team and sharing the stage with Demi, Alyson detailed instances where Demi’s fans would issue threats if they perceived any involvement from Alyson in Demi’s off-stage disputes.
Alyson stated, “My followers sent me messages threatening my life, suggesting I didn’t deserve to live, and warning that they would harm me if I crossed them regarding their beloved figure.
Apart from experiencing intense pressure to mask Demi’s absence for her fans, Alyson also faced this pressure when dealing with the media.
In a rather uncomfortable turn of events, various media outlets frequently made her the focus during my interviews. I responded to each query with a smile, despite feeling nauseous from keeping secrets at bay. The Step Up alum further expressed feelings of pathetic vulnerability as he grappled with moving on, particularly since he knew she no longer gave him a second thought.
Alyson crossed paths with the artist behind “Cool for the Summer” during auditions for Camp Rock, where she reminisced about initially thinking Demi had an innate coolness about her. Upon both securing roles, they formed a friendship and made a pact to support each other in overcoming their body image concerns.
Alyson reflected, “We hadn’t quite figured out how our food issues would play out, and we weren’t fully aware of the complex problems lurking beneath our superficial food dilemmas. Yet, we wished to support each other, vowing never to serve as a motivator for weight loss. Regrettably, our positive intentions couldn’t withstand the pressure, and there was no opportunity to step back and adjust our course. We were on an unstoppable roller coaster.
For fourteen years, there had been no communication between them. However, this changed when Demi interviewed Alyson for her 2024 documentary titled “Child Star.” This film delved into the challenging experiences that child actors encounter as they grow up under public scrutiny.
Alyson shared that after Demi apologized, she realized her younger self had been longing for an apology on the doorstep since their turbulent time. This conversation allowed her to gain a deeper understanding and empathy towards Demi’s painful experiences. As they contemplated rekindling their relationship, they focused on safeguarding current and future generations from similar hardships.
