In the preface of Uncle Scrooge and the The Infinity Dime from last year, writer Jason Aaron labeled Scrooge McDuck as one of the most remarkable adventurer characters in comic book lore. If Aaron didn’t convince readers with that single issue, he is certainly moving towards it again with the sequel. Essentially, Uncle Scrooge: The Ultimate Duck Tales Adventure represents a super-sized version of the original Duck Tales storyline.
The tale begins as the wealthiest duck globally experiences a horrifying reality. His treasure chest is depleted, and menacing mechanical thieves are after his riches. Instead of the bustling town of Duckburg, he now finds himself in an eerily deserted wasteland, devoid of any signs of life.
Duckburg has been overtaken by extraterrestrial Connoisseurs who aim to seize all valuable possessions on Earth. Yet, they failed in their pursuit of Uncle Scrooge’s wealth and fortune, causing them to chase after Scrooge’s loved ones, which include friends, family, and employees. However, they remain oblivious about Scrooge’s whereabouts and the fate of his riches.
Earth’s Mightiest Duck blends other genres with Uncle Scrooge
Unveiling a fact that might not be surprising, the introductory part is akin to a real-life horror show. A significant portion of the humor arises from within Uncle Scrooge’s mind, as the Connoisseurs attempt to locate his hidden wealth. This results in an exceptional segment where Scrooge embarks on a rescue mission for his younger self, during which his memories are being wiped out. Although my anticipation for this issue was significant, I must admit that I wasn’t prepared for a psychedelic adventure reminiscent of Inception and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
In this part of the narrative, Donald Duck emerges as a particularly challenging inmate for the Connoisseurs. Meanwhile, Huey, Dewey, and Louie take on the role of rebellious forces, or ‘The Resistance’. Compared to the lighter tone of Duck Tales cartoons, this half of the book adopts a moodier vibe reminiscent of European Disney comics. Interestingly, various artists more renowned in Europe than America handle the illustrations for these sections.
It’s understandable if one might initially think that Uncle Scrooge: Earth’s Mightiest Duck is purely for kids. However, don’t let that assumption mislead you! While marketed as an all-ages comic, it offers entertainment that extends beyond just children. In fact, this comical tale of a “humble duck” is guaranteed to resonate with both the young and those young in spirit.
