As a passionate admirer of the creative talents behind the scenes, I’m thrilled to share that “The Roses” is an upcoming film from the esteemed director Jay Roach (Austin Powers, Meet the Parents, The Campaign, Trumbo) and the brilliant writer Tony McNamara (The Favourite, Cruella, Poor Things). This captivating tale delves into the complexities of a seemingly idyllic marriage on the brink of collapse.

Additionally, what makes this version even more impressive is its star-studded ensemble, boasting award-winning talents from diverse acting genres and continents. The Roses cast: who stars in the film?

The Roses boasts an impressive ensemble cast. Confirmed cast includes:

  • Benedict Cumberbatch as Theo Rose
  • Olivia Colman as Ivy Rose
  • Andy Samberg as Barry
  • Kate McKinnon as Amy
  • Allison Janney as Eleanor
  • Belinda Bromilow as Janice
  • Sunita Mani as Jane
  • Ncuti Gatwa as Jeffrey
  • Jamie Demetriou as Rory
  • Zoë Chao as Sally

The cast features a blend of British and American talent, with Andy Samberg, Kate McKinnon, and Olivia Colman all having their roots in sketch comedy. Interestingly, their career starts were surprisingly similar – Samberg and McKinnon both gained fame on Saturday Night Live, while Colman was a regular on the various Mitchell and Webb comedies.

In my perspective as a movie enthusiast, I must mention that this film marks the debut of Ncuti Gatwa on the big screen since he bid adieu to Doctor Who. Interestingly enough, it happens to release concurrently with movies featuring two other Doctors – Matt Smith in “Caught Stealing” and David Tennant in “The Thursday Murder Club.

The Roses plot: What is it about?

Drawing heavily from Warren Adler’s 1981 novel and incorporating elements from Danny DeVito’s 1989 film adaptation, The Roses chronicles the disintegration of the seemingly idyllic union between Theo and Ivy Rose.

In my humble opinion as a film enthusiast, the characters in this production begin to exhibit increasingly sharp thorns, becoming more bitter, cutting, and vindictive towards one another. Their personal turmoil seems to seep insidiously from the game they’re engaged in, spreading its toxicity into the lives of their companions.

Essentially, this movie leans more towards a romantic comedy genre, but the romance aspect might not be the main focus. However, don’t misunderstand; the film certainly carries an emotional resonance as it spans over two decades, providing a comprehensive exploration of love, matrimony, and friendship.
