Even though DCU’s theatrical run with Superman is wrapping up, according to James Gunn, who is the writer/director and co-chair of DC Studios, there may be a new Superman installment gracing our screens soon. Tonight, on the red carpet for Season 2 of Peacemaker (premiering August 21st on HBO MAX), Gunn hinted at the release date of the next chapter in Superman’s story. Although he was there primarily to support the show he created, produced, and directed, Gunn didn’t hesitate to discuss what’s coming up for the Man of Steel.
In a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Gunn shared his aspirations for returning to work: “I’ve already drafted the plotline for the next chapter in what I like to call the Superman series,” Gunn said to THR. “I’m currently developing that and, ideally, starting production on it, not too long after this conversation.
Earlier, Gunn stated that his forthcoming DCU film won’t be a direct continuation of this summer’s blockbuster hit, and more recently, David Zaslav, CEO of Warner Brothers Discovery, mentioned during an earnings call that Gunn’s “upcoming project falls under the Super-Family”. This openness from key figures at Warner Brothers/DC about future plans for the DCU is encouraging – it suggests unity among the leadership and may indicate optimism regarding the success of the 2026 release of the “Supergirl” movie in June.
According to Gunn, the plan for the upcoming “Superman” movie is well-developed. A treatment, which is a detailed summary of a film’s story, usually comes before the actual script. Although Gunn hinted at starting production soon, it seems there will be a few more months of writing from him before shooting can begin. After that, David Corenswet will once again put on the famous blue Superman suit.

It appears from Gunn and Zaslov’s comments that there’s a strong likelihood that the upcoming film will feature Superman teaming up with his cunning cousin Kara Zor-El, which we’re really looking forward to for several reasons. Firstly, their playful interaction at the end of “Superman” was not only humorous but also showcased an unusual dynamic between Superman and Kara unlike any other he’s had with metahumans. Secondly, this team-up suggests that Gunn intends to avoid overwhelming audiences with an excessive number of new characters in the DCU right from the start.
In a different yet understandable way, Gunn is concentrating on establishing the fundamentals of his DC cinematic universe by creating individual movies for key characters first and then quickly teaming them up. This strategy aims to create a strong base for the DCU. For example, Clayface and the Lanterns series are scheduled for release next year along with Supergirl. There’s also a lot of work ongoing with other DC characters too. By focusing on a few key characters extensively, Gunn intends to avoid the mistake Marvel made by introducing numerous new characters across their films and Disney+ shows, making it difficult for audiences to follow the MCU without being hardcore fans or watching multiple origin movies like they did before The Avengers.
While some might dispute Gunn’s focused and detailed approach to the DCU and its highlighted characters, his success is undeniable. The staggering $583 million worldwide earnings of the Superman film, along with its positive critical acclaim, strongly suggests that Gunn is indeed hitting the mark.
Superman releases on VOD August 15th.
