Enthusiasm among followers of Downton Abbey and The Gilded Age for a possible crossover has been simmering for some time, and now there’s some encouraging news on this topic.
In a recent disclosure, Julian Fellowes, the mastermind behind both series, mentioned that the ongoing narratives offer a chance for the two universes to intersect in future episodes.
In the third season of “The Gilded Age,” the storyline extends to England, focusing on the marriage of Gladys Russell (Taissa Farmiga) and Hector, Duke of Buckingham (Ben Lamb). This setting opens up possibilities for interactions with the illustrious Crawley family.
Following the airing of the season 3 finale on the 10th of August, Fellowes mentioned to TVLine that considering both series take place in England, there’s a chance for a potential crossover.
He went on to explain: “Various events such as the hunting season or similar activities would bring together numerous grand estates, allowing these families to move about England.
We’re able to create a connection when needed, but we don’t have one scheduled just yet. So, we’ll have to wait and see what happens.
One issue with blending the two shows arises because The Gilded Age, set in the mid-1880s, predates Downton Abbey by several decades. However, it’s possible for viewers to meet younger versions of the popular Crawley family characters.
It’s not the first time rumours have swirled around a Gilded Age crossover.
Previously this year, many enthusiasts of And Just Like That sparked rumors when they suggested that the secretive novel being written by Carrie Bradshaw (played by Sarah Jessica Parker) could potentially be set in the era of The Gilded Age.
Indeed, when speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Michael Patrick King, the producer and showrunner of And Just Like That, swiftly dismissed the rumors about a potential crossover event. He made it clear that no such extraordinary collaboration was currently planned.
Though another season of The Gilded Age has been confirmed, Downton Abbey is poised to make a comeback with its final movie, Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale, hitting theaters in September. Fans will undoubtedly cross their fingers that this isn’t the Crawley family’s swan song.
