The Story Behind Freakier Friday’s Accidental Mean Girls Easter Egg

As a dedicated movie enthusiast, I must say it’s a thrill to see Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan reunite for the long-awaited sequel of “Freaky Friday,” now gracing our screens in 2025. The nostalgia is palpable, with this sequel brimming with delightful references to the original “Freaky Friday” and nods to Lohan’s iconic roles that have left fans grinning ear-to-ear. Interestingly enough, one of these callbacks even harks back to “Mean Girls,” though it seems this was an unintentional homage, as the actress behind these beloved characters shared during a heartwarming story about how October 3rd became a pivotal date in her legacy sequel.

Regardless of whether you’re a fan of Lindsay Lohan, a devoted Tina Fey supporter, or someone who appreciates high school comedies, the phrase “It’s October 3” likely holds significance for you due to its iconic status in the movie Mean Girls. Even if you don’t fit into any of these categories, this famous yet simple line is still widely recognized as one of the most memorable from the film. Interestingly, the date resurfaced when Lindsay Lohan portrayed Anna Coleman in Freaky Friday, as her character’s wedding invitation also features an October 3 wedding – see it here.

The star of The Parent Trap, whose roles we find captivating, seems to be attracting interest with the cozy autumn atmosphere. Moreover, her characters appear to be simply tagging along in this journey. Additionally, the girls’ expressions contribute to the overall enjoyment of the scenario, as a young Anna might have made similar faces to Harper.

All of that said, viewers who clocked the date were incredibly pleased by the quiet Easter egg. But from the sounds of it, the usage of the official Mean Girls day was truly not intended to be a callback. A clip of Lohan talking to Perri Nemiroff onInstagram reveals that she believes no one actually realized the importance of the date until they were on set. In fact, she was the one to ask while filming if anyone had made the connection, as she said:

As a movie enthusiast, during the filming of a particular scene in the kitchen – one of the initial takes – I couldn’t help but notice that it happened to be October 3rd. It seemed everyone on set was unaware, yet this date held special significance for me since it marked the anniversary of ‘Mean Girls.’ I found myself remarking, “You know, today is Mean Girls Day!

The coincidence of October being significant for two of her iconic characters is both amusing and fortuitous. It almost seems as if she must have done a double-take upon seeing the invitation, then questioned its authenticity. This leaves me pondering whether “Mean Girls Day” might be rechristened after Lindsay Lohan in future. Nonetheless, it has certainly sparked my desire to revisit this classic with my Peacock subscription.

It’s quite amusing, though, that even after the actress from “The Irish Wish” drew attention to the similarity, nobody corrected it. Lindsay Lohan jokingly attributed it to a secret nod for fans, but the film’s director, Nisha Ganatra, denied this claim. Interestingly, Lindsay Lohan commented:

No one took any action regarding it. I thought, “Alright, let’s ignore this, seems like an Easter egg,” and Nisha responded, “We don’t do Easter eggs.” To which I replied, “But you have already done so.

Regardless of what it was to the production, viewers adored the unintentional reference. It’s a sweet, subtle nod that is as insignificant as when “Mean Girls” used it. However, this accidental shoutout enhances the overall viewing experience. Besides being praised by critics and audiences, “Freaky Friday” has also experienced significant financial success. It has already surpassed a major box office milestone.

It’s no secret that the sequel has become a massive hit, rejuvenating the iconic film (which can now be streamed via Disney+), and propelling the Lohan revival further. In truth, Lohan’s first significant television drama series is gathering pace rapidly. I have no doubt that many fans, including myself, will eagerly anticipate the discovery of more delightful “Mean Girls” Easter eggs in future productions.
