Jeff Bezos and his family are mourning a major loss.
In just a few weeks following Jeff Bezos’ wedding with Lauren Sanchez Bezos in Italy, the Bezos Family Foundation announced the heartbreaking news of Jackie Bezos, Jeff’s mother, passing away tranquilly at her residence in Miami on August 14th. She was 78 years old.
The cause of her demise was recorded as a five-year struggle against Lewy Body Dementia, a gradual neurological condition affecting the brain.
In simpler terms, the foundation characterized her late years as “a peaceful conclusion to a life that demonstrated to everyone around her, friends and relatives included, the genuine essence of resilience and perseverance, compassion, and selflessness.
Jeff, aged 61, additionally shared a heartfelt tribute acknowledging his mother, who gave birth to him when she and her spouse, Ted Jorgensen, were teenagers residing in New Mexico.
At just 17, she stepped into motherhood ahead of schedule as I was born. This wasn’t an easy path, but she navigated it admirably. She threw herself into the task of loving me deeply, welcoming my father into our family a few years later, and eventually extending her care to include my sister and brother.
For the remainder of her life, Jeff – who was an infant when his parents split up – continued to expand the circle of people he cherished deeply.
For years, she generously offered more than she ever received. Sadly, after a prolonged battle with Lewy Body Dementia, she left us today, enveloped by the warmth of those who adored her – her children, grandchildren, and my father. I believe she sensed our affection during her last moments. We were all privileged to have known her. She will remain eternally cherished in my heart.
After parting ways with Ted, Jackie subsequently tied the knot with Miguel “Mike” Bezos and became the mother of Mark and Christina. Her experiences as a parent sparked her involvement in charitable activities.
In their statement, the foundation expresses that Jackie’s roles as a mother and student significantly influenced some of her most significant life accomplishments. Jackie’s altruistic spirit went far beyond the foundation, reaching into extensive philanthropic efforts centered around medical research and community health care.
She dedicated all her efforts to her family, even making numerous visits to RadioShack, which later became the position of CEO.
She invested everything in her family, taking many journeys to RadioShack that eventually led to the role of CEO.

In the midst of hardship, Lauren Sanchez Bezos publicly expressed her support for her husband by reposting a message from the Bezos Scholars on her Instagram Story, accompanied by a broken heart emoji.
Besides many others, numerous individuals who had personal interactions with Jackie, shared their heartfelt affection and treasured moments spent with her as well.
One Instagram user responded to the Bezos Scholars’ August 14 post saying, “Jackie saw potential within me that made me feel more confident about myself. Her story as a single mother was similar to mine. She has had a profound impact on my life. Since I met her, I have nurtured her love, happiness, kindness, and faith like a precious ember in my heart. I will continue to do so now with increased humility, respect, and motivation.”
One Instagram user wrote under the Bezos Scholars’ August 14 post, “Jackie saw something within me that allowed me to trust myself more. Her life story was reminiscent of my mother’s. She made a tremendous difference in my life. Since our meeting, I have cherished her love, cheerfulness, compassion, and faith like a sacred spark in my soul. I will carry on with this renewed humility, admiration, and zeal.”
