As a movie enthusiast, I’d say, in today’s era where heartwarming rom-coms are scarce, ‘Materialists‘ offers a sincere exploration of dating, focusing on matchmaking – not just casual encounters, but an agency that thoughtfully unites compatible singles. In this story, it falls upon Lucy (played by Dakota Johnson) to serve as both cupid and counselor, guiding her clients through the ups and downs of their dates, offering reassurance when they start nitpicking or the process needs a restart.
Lucy, who had split up with John (Chris Evans), a struggling actor, some time ago and was surprisingly single, encountered him again at the wedding of one of her clients, where he was temporarily working as a waiter. At that moment, she was beginning to harbor feelings for Harry (Pedro Pascal), the best man at the wedding, whom she later described as a rare find – tall, confident, charismatic, well-paid with a luxurious apartment. However, as portrayed by Pascal, he seemed rather ordinary and held a secret. Meanwhile, Lucy developed a relationship while also rekindling her friendship with John, even taking Harry along when they were invited to one of his plays. The character she referred to as a “unicorn” was someone like Harry – hard to find and seemingly perfect, but not without flaws or secrets.
Celine Song, who served as both writer and director, has personally dabbled in matchmaking and understood all too well the struggle of clients seeking unattainable ideal partners – an elusive “unicorn” that doesn’t truly exist for either men or women craving perfection in another. Women yearn for flawless matches while 40-something men display a strong preference for dating much younger women in their twenties.
In a well-suited manner, Johnson shines as she exhibits a calm demeanor, excels in her work, and remains readily accessible to her clients on both professional and personal levels – until one fateful encounter takes a disastrous turn. Evans continues to charm, while Pascal seamlessly fits into his role, though some may find him somewhat lackluster. For those who navigate the digital dating world, this film is an appealing choice, even if it’s not quite up to our Editor’s taste, given he’s swiped left so frequently that he now has a touch of whiplash from voodoo. However, Materialists offers a thoughtful, captivating, and entertaining drama, making it an ideal candidate for a first date movie, although some may find the situation potentially awkward.
