We’re sure you’ve heard of K-Pop Demon Hunters by now.
The movie has held the top spot on Netflix for an astonishing seven consecutive weeks, shattering previous viewing records for the streaming platform and is poised to set a new record as its most-watched film. That’s quite something to consider.
As a dedicated ARMY myself, I can’t help but cheer for another K-pop victory! Just recently, the anthemic tune “Golden” by the imaginative band HUNTR/X stormed its way to the top of the Billboard Hot 100, making it the first k-pop song to claim that prestigious spot. It’s a triumphant moment for us all, but I must admit, my BTS love remains unshaken!
You might expect that such positive reviews and high box office revenue would delight Sony Pictures Entertainment, the studio responsible for the film’s production, right? However, surprisingly, it hasn’t turned out to be the case.
As it turns out, Sony has licensed the franchise to Netflix, which means they’ll only make around $20 million in profit from the entire project. This information comes from a comprehensive report by media expert Matt Belloni.
Netflix is now describing this as its answer to Frozen, the billion dollar franchise from Disney.
Netflix is now considering plans for both a live-action version and an additional series of three animated movies.
Sony could benefit significantly since Netflix will likely require a movie producer, and given that they were the originators, going back to them appears to be a sensible choice.
It’s no surprise that Sony Pictures didn’t anticipate such unprecedented success, yet it underscores the significance of intellectual property ownership within the realm of entertainment sectors such as movies and video games.
