Despite One Piece’s ongoing global success, it continues to astonish fans that some of its animated movies haven’t made their way into the United States market. Recently, Crunchyroll added three One Piece films to its library: “One Piece – Episode of Arabasta: The Desert Princess and the Pirates”, “One Piece Film: Strong World”, and “One Piece Film: Z”. These are among the few One Piece movies legally distributed in the U.S. and come with an English dub. Although many recent One Piece theatrical films have been released internationally, including Japan, the early motion pictures remain unavailable legally within the United States.
The rights for filming a movie based on “One Piece” differ significantly from those for an anime series or TV show. This is the reason why the anime version of “One Piece” can appear on multiple streaming services, whereas the movies cannot. Moreover, “One Piece” has various business agreements, including exclusive contracts with Crunchyroll and Netflix. Deciding which films to distribute to which platforms becomes quite complex. So, the question arises about which “One Piece” films are not yet accessible for viewing.
All The One Piece Films You Still Can’t Watch
As a die-hard One Piece fan, I’ve got some disappointing news for fellow enthusiasts living in the US – only seven out of the fifteen One Piece films are legally available for viewing here! That means we’re missing out on eight fantastic movies, including the first seven and the eleventh motion picture. Quite a bummer, right? Hopefully, this situation changes soon so we can enjoy the entire collection without any hassle.
- One Piece: The Movie: The first One Piece movie that even predates Sanji. In this film, the Straw Hat crew races against a gold-obsessed pirate to find an ancient treasure.
- Clockwork Island Adventure: The crew must traverse an odd mechanical island to rescue Nami from being the bride of the island’s maniacal ruler.
- Chopper’s Kingdom on the Island of Strange Animals: The first film featuring Chopper, who finds himself ruling over an island of strange animals.
- Dead End Adventure: The Straw Hats join an underground ship race where they encounter a powerful pirate who used to be a Marine.
- The Cursed Holy Sword: A Zoro-starring film where the swordsman seemingly betrays his crew to help an old friend.
- Baron Omatsuri and the Secret Island: The crew head to a resort island where they encounter many strange happenings, leading to a dark confrontation with the island’s baron.
- The Giant Mechanical Soldier of Karakuri Castle: The Straw Hats arrive on an island filled with weird mechanical inventions, encountering some oddball pirates.
- One Piece 3D: Straw Hat Chase: A 3D-animated short where Luffy and crew chase after his Straw Hat.
Starting with the seventh movie, titled “Episode of Arabasta: The Desert Princess and the Pirates“, Funimation will handle dubbing and distribution of the One Piece films. All subsequent One Piece movies are now set to be accessible in the US, excluding One Piece 3D. After merging, film rights of the dubbed and licensed films will pass from Funimation to Crunchyroll. Notably, the eighth movie in the series, “Episode of Chopper Plus: Bloom in Winter, Miracle Sakura“, was unavailable in the United States for a long time. However, it has recently been added to Netflix, but only in its original Japanese subtitles.
It’s puzzling why no corporation has obtained the rights to the earlier “One Piece” films yet, as the cost of licensing these movies might be excessively high, making it impractical for them to be distributed internationally. The reception of the early films is divided, which could be the reason why no company has pursued ownership of the rights. However, some of the “One Piece” movies, such as “Baron Omatsuri and the Secret Island“, are exceptional. Eventually, these One Piece features may become available in the US through legal means, but it could take a while.
