As a dedicated cinephile, I was utterly astounded when the horror film “Weapons” sent shockwaves through the industry by reigning supreme at the box office during its debut weekend! Not only did this fright-fest surpass predictions by raking in an impressive $43.5 million domestically, but it even managed to outperform writer-director Zach Cregger’s previous movie, “Barbarian,” in total box office earnings.
With such a massive triumph under its belt, Warner Bros. and New Line are now eager to collaborate with Cregger once more to create an intriguing prequel revolving around the beloved character Aunt Gladys, portrayed by the talented Amy Madigan. In her latest interview with Entertainment Weekly, Madigan shares insights about this upcoming project and discusses whether or not she’d be open to reprising her role for this thrilling venture.
When addressing the outlet, Madigan compared the prequel to her portrayal of Gladys being nominated for an Oscar. For her, it’s not genuine until it occurs. “It’s not that I dismiss it,” she said, “but in this industry, nothing is real until it actually happens. The fun I had working with Zach and delving into his mind is the true gift of the movie. The rest is tied up in discussions I wouldn’t be privy to and business matters. But, you know, I adore Gladys, so I’ll stop there.
Madigan’s statement isn’t entirely off-base. Warner Bros. and New Line are open to collaborating with Cregger again on a film about Aunt Gladys, but the project is currently in its initial phases as Cregger is occupied with a new Resident Evil reboot for Sony. This production, which Cregger refers to as an original story rooted in the video game series’ lore, is preparing to start filming in Prague.
Certainly, Cregger does have an idea for a prequel movie based on Gladys, stemming from a chapter in “Weapons” that initially focused on her background but was later removed. It’s speculated this chapter could be adapted into a script for the prequel film. However, there is no confirmed timeline for the potential “Weapons” prequel.
Alongside his work on “Resident Evil,” Cregger has also written a screenplay named “Henchman,” set within the DC Universe. Warner Bros. and DC Studios are anticipated to be considering this project, which could further delay the production of a Gladys prequel movie.
Currently, supporters can savor Madigan’s outstanding portrayal as Aunt Gladys in the film “Weapons”, and prepare to emulate the renowned character for Halloween. This successful horror movie has already grossed over $108 million globally on a low budget of $38 million. With predictions that it will maintain its leading position at the box office during its second week, earning an estimated $27.5 million. Although “Weapons” does not yet have a streaming release date, fans can already pre-order the movie in 4K Blu-ray with a limited edition steelbook case.
Weapons is now playing exclusively in movie theaters everywhere.
