Fans of “Gintama” are in for a treat, as this year will see the launch of a fresh spin-off series that will offer a unique perspective on the main character. At a recent Japanese event honoring the popular franchise, it was announced that a new movie is in development and set to release sooner than anticipated. The upcoming film, titled “Gintama: Yoshiwara in Flames“, promises to take us back to this animated world once more. A new trailer has been released to give fans an idea of what they can anticipate from the series’ theatrical comeback.
In 2026, the movie titled “Gintama: Yoshiwara in Flames” will be released, revisiting the anime arc that spanned episodes 139 to 146 from the original series which debuted in 2009. In this storyline, the primary characters venture into a seedy red-light district, engaging with a new adversary, Housen. Apart from this movie, another project based on the same anime franchise, “Gintama-sensei,” is slated for release this October during the busy autumn anime season. While “Gintama-sensei” will also feature familiar characters, the plot of “Yoshiwara in Flames” differs significantly from what you might anticipate. You can watch the new movie trailer and view the first poster below.
Gintama in Flames
In preparation for the upcoming theatrical show, “Gintama” will be welcoming back its iconic voice actors to animate their characters once more. The cast has already been revealed with these talented individuals: Tomokazu Sugita, Daisuke Sakaguchi, Rie Kugimiya, Susumu Chiba, Kazuya Nakai, Kenichi Suzumura, Tetsuharu Ota, and Mikako Takahashi. During the 20th anniversary event where this news was unveiled, voice actor Daisuke Sakaguchi posted this message:
Absolutely! We’re working on a fresh, brand-new movie based on “Gintama”. This is the concluding segment of our 20th Anniversary Project and goes by the title “New Gintama The Movie: Yoshiwara in Flames“. We’re rebuilding the Yoshiwara arc from scratch, creating a completely fresh animation for it. Let’s strive to earn 10 billion yen at the box office!
As an onlooker, I can’t help but fuel the anticipation by sharing a fascinating comment from the brilliant mind behind Gintama, Hideaki Sorachi. In reference to the upcoming film and the franchise in general, he mused, “It seems fitting for the unpredictable Gintama to end with a grand blaze, perhaps due to some lower body challenges faced by Sugita. This unexpected twist, bringing together excitement and apprehension, is part of what makes Gintama special. So, please, don’t leave us hanging!
If you’re interested in watching Gintama before the movie comes out, you’ve got a few months to do so! You can find the entire series, including the latest film, Gintama: The Final, on Crunchyroll. As a popular shonen franchise, it’s definitely worth checking out if you haven’t experienced the combination of action and comedy yet. Enjoy the ride!
