In a notable turn of events, The Punisher has emerged as one of Marvel Comics‘ most beloved antiheroes, making his debut in the issues of The Amazing Spider-Man. This saga kicked off when Jackal deceived Punisher into thinking Spider-Man was a villain, inciting him to attempt shooting the hero. Upon discovering Spider-Man was actually a hero and not a villain, this revelation created a tense dynamic between them moving forward. The Punisher later targeted Spider-Man once more under the assumption that he was straying off course, and Spider-Man retaliated against Punisher when he believed Frank Castle was exploiting his family’s deaths as justification for his murderous actions.
As a devoted fan, I’ve noticed an intriguing shift in the dynamic between Spider-Man and the Punisher. Instead of their usual friendly banter or unexpected alliances, they now seem to lock eyes with an adversarial intensity that sets the stage for exhilarating encounters. These altercations, while tense, never fail to deliver an entertaining spectacle.
10) The Amazing Spider-Man #129
As a dedicated comic book enthusiast, I can’t help but reminisce about my first encounter with The Punisher back in issue #129 of The Amazing Spider-Man. In this thrilling tale, the cunning Jackal was up to his old tricks, attempting to sabotage Spidey’s life by recruiting a new, brutal vigilante in New York City – none other than Frank Castle, also known as The Punisher.
With a cleverly spun web of deceit, Jackal managed to persuade me that Spider-Man was nothing more than a common crook. But let me tell you, I’ve always prided myself on being an honorable vigilante – ready and willing to take down the bad guys, but also bound by my own strict code of ethics.
When I faced off against Spider-Man for the first time, I had the opportunity to end his life. However, as the dust settled from our fierce battle, it became clear that Jackal had been feeding me false information all along. In that moment, I chose not to execute Spidey and instead turned my sights on the true villain – the deceitful Jackal.
So there you have it – a glimpse into the first appearance of The Punisher and the moment I proved myself as more than just a ruthless killer, but an honorable vigilante with principles.
9) Amazing Spider-Man Annual #15
In the comic book “Amazing Spider-Man Annual” #15, Spider-Man and The Punisher engaged in a confrontation. This occurred when Spider-Man decided to apprehend The Punisher for killing a man, leaving a young girl in danger due to poisoning. However, it turned out the girl was already poisoned, and The Punisher was aware that he could obtain a cure if he located it. Fortunately, Spider-Man managed to find the antidote, saving the girl’s life and halting The Punisher. This particular issue is notable not just for this action, but also because The Punisher was eventually surrounded by police and chose to surrender peacefully without putting up a fight, as he refused to harm officers. The scene of The Punisher in the back of the police car, questioning the number of criminals he would encounter while imprisoned, is quite chilling.
8) The Amazing Spider-Man #134-135
In issue #134 of “The Amazing Spider-Man”, a new adversary named Tarantula makes his debut alongside an old foe’s return – The Punisher. Under the misconception that Spider-Man is actually the villain Jackal, whom The Punisher had been led to believe was behind criminal activities, he confronts Spidey on a boat he thinks has been hijacked (in reality it was Tarantula). A battle ensues, but when The Punisher learns the truth, they team up to defeat Tarantula and his crew. This story is notable because it features a less violent Punisher, acting more like a traditional hero, and marks one of the few instances where he collaborates with Spider-Man without any immediate disagreements (beyond their initial encounter on the boat).
7) Punisher War Journal Vol. 2 #13
Initially, Garth Ennis maintained a strict policy against the Punisher associating with superheroes. However, Matt Fraction took a drastic turn by introducing both heroes and formidable villains for the Punisher to pursue. In the first volume of “Punisher War Journal” issue 13, Rhino is compelled to participate in a bank robbery, resulting in the death of a guard during the heist. The Punisher responds by attempting to kill Rhino with a rocket launcher and missiles, but Spider-Man intervenes to save Rhino, leading to a confrontation between them. The Punisher finds himself at odds when Spider-Man saves the villains, only for them to turn on him. Eventually, Spider-Man halts the Punisher’s attempt to kill Rhino by wrapping him in webbing. Although Spider-Man features only briefly in this instance, it sets the stage for a conflict between the Punisher and Kraven in the subsequent issues.
6) Amazing Spider-Man #201-202
In issue #201 of The Amazing Spider-Man, a two-part story unfolds where Spider-Man and The Punisher join forces. At this juncture, The Punisher was still using rubber bullets for regular crooks, keeping his lethal ammunition for more dangerous adversaries. Upon their first encounter in this tale, Spider-Man discovers that The Punisher is after a drug dealer named Lorenzo Jacobi, intending to eliminate him. When Spider-Man voices his disapproval, The Punisher responds by firing a mercy bullet and retreating. However, as the narrative progresses, both heroes find themselves aligned, as The Punisher confesses that Jacobi was responsible for the death of someone he had once saved. With a score to settle, they team up, with Spider-Man even preventing The Punisher from executing Jacobi. Regrettably, Jacobi meets his end in a car accident, allowing The Punisher to achieve justice without having to take a life himself.
5) Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man Vol 1 #81-83
As a movie critic, I must say that one of the most gripping Spider-Man tales unfolded in “Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man” Volume 1 issues #81-83. In this thrilling three-part series, our friendly neighborhood Spidey found himself caught between Cloak & Dagger, who were intent on assassinating the Kingpin, and none other than the relentless anti-hero, The Punisher.
While my web-slinging hero was valiantly trying to prevent Cloak & Dagger’s violent mission, he also had to contend with the brutal Punisher. This storyline saw Spider-Man taking quite a battering, teetering on the brink of being consumed by Cloak’s darkness and enduring heavy punches from The Punisher himself.
However, the climax of this gripping narrative came when The Punisher managed to reach Kingpin first and threatened his wife, Vanessa Fisk. Kingpin retaliated with a brutal attack that left The Punisher on the verge of death.
The final issue of this tale took an unexpected turn as The Punisher was put on trial, leading him to a shocking breakdown when he realized that his methods, though he believed them to be the only means of saving society, were not being understood or supported by others. It was a poignant moment that served as a chilling reminder of the lengths this tormented character had reached.
4) Punisher Vol. 6 #32-34
Garth Ennis, while working on his Punisher series, generally shied away from incorporating superheroes, and it was evident in the stories when they did appear that he had little fondness for them. In issues #32-34 of Punisher Vol. 6, Ennis introduced three Marvel Comics heroes – Spider-Man, Daredevil, and Wolverine – into his narrative. However, Ennis carefully crafted the story to demonstrate that Frank Castle was always the dominant figure, with the three heroes often portrayed as bumbling fools. In the end, all three of these heroes were left appearing rather foolish. The Punisher cleverly manipulated Wolverine into attempting to kill him, knowing that Daredevil and Spider-Man would intervene, and while they fought, he deftly escaped to carry out his mission against the sex traffickers he had been targeting all along.
3) Punisher: War Zone Vol 3 #1-5
In the third volume of “Punisher: War Zone,” a five-issue mini-series unfolds. By this point, Spider-Man, now an Avenger himself, has grown weary of watching The Punisher take lives. He rallies his fellow Avengers to apprehend The Punisher. Initially indifferent, the Avengers eventually agree and set out to confront Frank Castle. However, by the fifth issue, they all found themselves eager to halt him, as he proved far more formidable than any of them anticipated.
In this series, Spider-Man becomes increasingly aggressive towards The Punisher, labeling him a murderer who uses his deceased family as an excuse. Despite this confrontation, Spider-Man manages to subdue The Punisher (with the help of the Avengers), but not without difficulty. Interestingly, The Punisher assists someone in gaining freedom by stalling the Avengers, ultimately surrendering only when Captain America intervened because he refuses to fight Cap.
2) Giant-Size Spider-Man #4
In issue #4 of “Giant-Size Spider-Man”, Spider-Man pursues The Punisher after the latter had saved Spiderman’s life during a fight against kidnappers. However, when Spider-Man learns that The Punisher would have let the hostage die if it meant following a lead, he confronts him. A fierce battle ensues, with The Punisher overpowering Spider-Man by shooting him with a tranquilizer. Much like in many early stories featuring these two characters, their fight eventually leads to an alliance. In this instance, they join forces against a terrorist named Moses Magnum, who was planning to sell lethal gas on the open market. This team-up was particularly shocking as The Punisher fired a canister of poison gas at Magnum, and Spider-Man helped seal the room shut, presumably killing all the terrorists. This was the only time Spider-Man willingly aided The Punisher in taking a life.
1) Ultimate Spider-Man #157
As a devoted cinephile immersed in the world of comic book adaptations, I’d rephrase that as follows:
In the gripping saga of the Ultimate Universe, it was here that one of the most heartrending confrontations between Spider-Man and The Punisher unfolded. This epic battle took place amidst the tumultuous events of the Ultimate Avengers vs. New Ultimates narrative. Led by Nick Fury, a group consisting of Black Widow, Hawkeye, War Machine, The Punisher, and Blade clashed with Captain America, Carol Danvers, Iron Man, Giant-Man, and Thor – the New Ultimates. The conflict escalated swiftly, leading to a dramatic entrance by none other than Spider-Man.
Fury had instructed The Punisher to eliminate Captain America, but The Punisher refused to take his life. In an attempt to immobilize Cap, The Punisher aimed for a non-lethal shot. Unbeknownst to him, Spider-Man intervened at the crucial moment, hurling himself between The Punisher and Cap to protect the latter. Unfortunately, this selfless act resulted in Spider-Man taking the bullet meant for Captain America.
Despite suffering a grievous gunshot wound, our heroic wall-crawler rallied his strength to save Aunt May from the clutches of the Ultimate Goblin. However, the battle left him gravely weakened, and he succumbed to blood loss shortly after the fight was over. In this tragic tale, The Punisher unwittingly took Spider-Man’s life.
