Even though Spider-Man has only starred in three movies within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he’s faced a decent number of his iconic adversaries. In “Spider-Man: Homecoming” and “Spider-Man: No Way Home”, Vulture and Mysterio challenge him, creating difficulties for Spider-Man as he juggles high school life and hero duties. The Marvel Cinematic Universe amps up the action in “Spider-Man: No Way Home”, introducing no less than five villains from previous Spider-Man series. It’s a team effort to defeat them, with two versions of Peter Parker stepping in, but Earth-616’s Spider-Man can’t rely on friends being available every time.
In a new chapter titled “Spider-Man: A Fresh Start,” Peter Parker will embark on solo adventures, crossing paths with two other Marvel Cinematic Universe characters – the Hulk and the Punisher. Initially, these encounters might not be friendly, but tension between them doesn’t mean there won’t be a formidable villain in the mix. Although they seem minor antagonists on paper, they could potentially embody the MCU’s rendition of Venom, preventing Spider-Man from ever donning the symbiote suit.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day Is Finally Going to Pay Off Homecoming‘s Mid-Credits Scene
In the heat of battle against the Vulture, who was peddling alien tech to New York’s criminal underworld, Peter recognizes he’s bitten off more than he can handle. Nevertheless, his commitment to righteousness remains unwavering, and he heads to the Staten Island Ferry, anticipating a major transaction. As expected, the Vulture is present, prompting Spider-Man to challenge him without hesitation. However, the situation spirals out of control, causing extensive damage to the boat. Thankfully, all passengers are safe, but their safety is due in part to Iron Man’s intervention. Tony Stark chides Peter for taking on too much, but there is a silver lining: Peter’s involvement thwarted the Vulture’s plans, albeit in a somewhat chaotic manner.
Mac Gargan, previously a notorious criminal, was captured by the FBI on a ferry. Later in the mid-credits scene of the movie “Homecoming”, Vulture (another criminal) encounters Gargan in prison where they talk about Spider-Man’s true identity. Though Vulture didn’t reveal it, Gargan clearly harbors resentment towards Spider-Man and plans revenge. Now, in the storyline “Brand New Day”, Gargan gets his chance to take action. However, with some powerful villains appearing in the next Marvel Cinematic Universe “Spider-Man” movie, it won’t be easy for Gargan to stand up to them even wearing his scorpion costume.
Mac Gargan May Be Skipping His Scorpion Phase in the MCU
In a celebratory social media post, actor Michael Mando shared an image of his character Gargan donning the classic green Scorpion suit from the comics. While speculations suggest that this MCU character may seek revenge against Spider-Man and hinder his battle with the Hulk in the upcoming film “Homecoming,” a closer look at Mando’s picture seems to contradict this theory. The image also reveals Gargan’s transformation into Venom, a symbiote bond formed after he discovered Spider-Man’s true identity. In the comics, Gargan, as Venom, terrorized various heroes and was instrumental in Norman Osborn’s Thunderbolts and Dark Avengers teams, becoming one of Osborn’s most formidable enforcers.
Given that Sony’s franchise has previously centered around Eddie Brock as Venom, it appears the MCU might be considering a different route. By bestowing the symbiote on Gargan instead, he would not encounter any difficulties in confronting both Spider-Man and the Hulk, while executing his plans as depicted in Brand New Day. The introduction of Venom currently could potentially prevent Peter Parker from donning the symbiote suit. However, this wouldn’t necessarily be detrimental, since that tale has already been portrayed on the big screen. The MCU is dedicated to maintaining novelty by introducing fresh heroes and adversaries. A simple approach to continue this momentum would be by providing one of Spider-Man’s primary antagonists with a new appearance.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day hits theaters on July 31, 2026.
