While not all Eldritch Invocations are ideal for every character build, there are several versatile choices that can benefit most builds.
1. Repelling Blast
The Repelling Blast ability allows you to influence the battlefield strategy by pushing opponents away when you cast Eldritch Blast. Upon hitting an enemy, they are moved up to 10 feet away from you in a direct line. This is beneficial for keeping melee enemies at bay, as it often enables you to adjust your position-or provides time for your teammates to reposition themselves-without instigating an attack of opportunity.
2. Agonizing Blast
In a typical Warlock setup, given that their spellcasting relies on Charisma, you’ll often find yourself with a good Charisma score. This makes Agonizing Blast an almost necessary Eldritch Invocation choice, as it allows you to boost the damage your Eldritch Blast inflicts upon hit by adding your Charisma modifier to it. Essentially, this provides an additional, complimentary damage bonus for free.
3. Mask of Many Faces
For Warlocks who have fewer spell slots compared to other casters, it’s advantageous to have alternatives that don’t deplete these precious resources. The Mask of Many Faces allows for the constant casting of Disguise Self without using a spell slot, which might not be useful in many typical campaign scenarios. Moreover, being able to use it frequently and without spending spell slots means that you’ll find numerous opportunities to employ it, even if its results aren’t always useful.
5. Devil’s Sight
As a cunning gamer, I’d say this Eldritch Invocation, Devil’s Sight, is a game-changer, especially in campaigns filled with shadowy realms or foes who delight in weaving spells of magical darkness. This badge empowers me to see clearly up to 120 feet even when the veil of darkness turns mystical – something regular Darkvision can’t claim!
While it may not be the perfect choice for campaigns teeming with bright areas, it still offers a unique edge that I can leverage in most situations. It’s like having a lantern that never dims, illuminating the shadows to reveal the unseen!
6. Eldritch Mind
The Eldritch Mind feature is incredibly beneficial if you’re frequently casting concentration spells, as it grants you an advantage when making Constitution saving throws to maintain the concentration of these spells. Even if your character doesn’t specialize heavily in spellcasting, you’ll likely use concentration spells often during the campaign, so having this feature can be a wise precaution to ensure that you don’t waste a valuable spell slot on a failed saving throw that causes you to lose concentration on the spell.
7. Eldritch Sight
As a spell-wielder, you’ll find immense value in mastering the Eldritch Sight. Unlike traditional spells that require spell slots, this one allows you, effectively, to cast Detect Magic on autopilot. It does need concentration, but its usefulness extends far beyond the heat of combat. Primarily, you can utilize it to scrutinize every room you step into for magical auras, all without dipping into your precious spell slots.
8. One with Shadows
In comparison to other choices, this Eldritch Invocation offers a more context-dependent power, yet it can prove incredibly potent in the right storyline. With the Shadow option, you have the ability to conceal yourself using your action within dim light or darkness, remaining unseen until you either move, take an action, or react. This could serve advantageously for setting up an ambush against a target or allowing a patrol to pass by undetected.
9. Tome of Levistus
As a seasoned gamer, I’ve got an awesome defensive trick up my sleeve – the Tome of Levistus! In those tight spots when things start to heat up and damage is incoming, this baby allows me to react swiftly by encasing myself in icy armor on the fly. This shield holds until the end of my following turn, granting me temporary hit points equal to 10 times my Warlock level while I’m all frozen and chilly. The ice eventually melts, but during that reaction, it absorbs the damage meant for me – quite a lifesaver!
10. Armor of Shadows
Warlocks aren’t the most fragile nor the sturdiest class, but they offer a balanced playstyle. Fortunately, Armor of Shadows provides an excellent defensive option for you. By choosing this Eldritch Invocation, you can cast Mage Armor on-demand without exhausting your spell slots, ensuring you’re always ready with Mage Armor for each encounter.
Playing as a warlock can be entertaining, but constructing one involves numerous decisions due to the variety of options available. The optimal selections can fluctuate depending on your character build, party configuration, and the specific campaign, as your requirements will differ. Therefore, it’s beneficial to have a list of reliable choices that are consistently effective.
