Today, comedy sequels are extremely popular. After nearly four decades, a follow-up to the classic “Spaceballs” is being developed, with Mel Brooks set to emerge from retirement for it. Brooks is a renowned figure in the comedy world, responsible for directing acclaimed works such as “Blazing Saddles” and “Young Frankenstein.” However, Brooks’ pace slowed down in the 1990s, allowing other comedians to rise to prominence. Among these, Adam Sandler stands out, known for starring in hits like “The Waterboy” and “Billy Madison.” Unfortunately, neither of those films gained enough traction to spawn a sequel, unlike another Sandler production.
This summer, I was thrilled to see “Happy Gilmore 2” on Netflix, with Adam Sandler once again stepping into the unconventional golfer’s shoes, a character who flouts the standard golfing etiquette. The film is jam-packed with appearances from well-known figures like Ben Stiller and Travis Kelce. However, one unexpected figure snags one of the most significant roles in “Happy Gilmore 2”, and considering their near brush with a superhero franchise, it’s hardly shocking.
Bad Bunny Continues His Meteoric Rise in Happy Gilmore 2
Crossing over from music to acting isn’t unheard of these days. Justin Timberlake and David Bowie, with their memorable movie roles, are prime examples. Now, it’s Bad Bunny’s turn to test the waters in Tinseltown. Amidst dropping successful rap albums, he’s managed to make a mark on WWE shows and become a frequent face on Saturday Night Live, performing his popular tunes and appearing in sketches. Nevertheless, his small-screen roles can’t compete with his silver screen exploits, which include appearances in blockbusters like F9 and Bullet Train. In fact, he has a significant role in Darren Aronofsky’s upcoming film, Caught Stealing.
During the process of creating “Happy Gilmore 2,” the rapper caught Sandler’s attention and was cast as Oscar Mejías in the Netflix film. In this movie, Bad Bunny portrays Happy’s caddy, standing by his side as he navigates a return to golf. Loyalty proves beneficial for Mejías, who ultimately receives a favorable conclusion. However, Bad Bunny doesn’t always secure victory due to a studio deciding to have him play a comic book character, but later retracting the offer.
Sony Brought Bad Bunny in to Play El Muerto
In 2022, I felt quite confident about Sony’s Marvel Universe, even though the film ‘Morbius’ didn’t perform as well as expected. The ‘Venom’ franchise was holding its own, and movies like ‘Madame Web’ and ‘Kraven the Hunter,’ with their big-name cast members, were causing a stir. The plan was to create an ‘El Muerto’ film, focusing on a lesser-known comic book character who wore wrestling masks for extraordinary power. To get a project like this moving, we needed a big star, and we chose Bad Bunny. Everything seemed to be progressing smoothly until 2023, when Sony removed the movie from its release schedule. Soon after, Bad Bunny announced he was no longer associated with the project, leaving its fate uncertain.
There’s been talk that the character El Muerto could proceed without Bad Bunny, but it seems Sony is more concentrated on wrapping up the Spider-Verse trilogy and establishing a presence in television. The rapper has since formed a tight connection with Sandler and continues to release music. Yet, this doesn’t rule out a potential superhero role for him entirely. With the Marvel Cinematic Universe thriving and James Gunn pushing multiple projects at DC Studios, it could just be a question of time before one of the major studios extends an offer to Bad Bunny to leverage Sony’s potential missed opportunity.
Happy Gilmore 2 is streaming on Netflix.
