In the return of Wednesday Season 2, Part 1 on Netflix following a three-year absence, it largely meets and even surpasses expectations, but one aspect might have fallen short for some devoted fans. The second season of Wednesday maintains many elements that contributed to the first season’s unprecedented success, offering enhanced character interactions, a greater focus on other Addams family members, and novel mysteries for Jenna Ortega’s protagonist to explore further.
An essential aspect of the series revolves around Enid Sinclair, portrayed by Emma Myers, who shares Wednesday’s dorm room and forms an unanticipated deep friendship. Their relationship, characterized by a peculiar dynamic with Enid’s vibrant, cheerful personality clashing against Wednesday’s fascination with the grim, dismal, and lethal, brought a great deal of humor and emotion to Season 1. Some viewers even dreamt about their potential blossoming into an unconventional romantic pairing. However, based on Season 2, Part 1 and statements from the showrunners, it appears that these romantic expectations will not be fulfilled (at least for now).
Wednesday Seemingly Has No Plans For A Wednesday & Enid Romance
It appears that the Netflix series “Wednesday” isn’t giving away any hints about a romantic connection between Wednesday and Enid (also known as Wenclair). So far, there’s no indication of either character harboring feelings for the other. With Tyler Galpin, who played the Hyde, behind bars and Xavier Thorpe not returning for Season 2, it seems that the characters won’t be involved in a romance at this time. This isn’t surprising since Julia Ortega, who plays Wednesday, mentioned that Season 2 would focus less on romantic storylines.
In the narrative of ‘Wednesday’, character Enid is currently entangled in a love triangle. Similar to Wednesday’s situation with Tyler and Xavier, she finds herself caught between two suitors – Ajax Petropolus from Season 1 and her new werewolf companion Bruno Yuson. This love triangle is expected to remain a significant element of the storyline in ‘Wednesday’ Season 2, Part 2. Although it doesn’t completely exclude the possibility of Enid developing a romance with someone else in the remaining four episodes, it appears extremely improbable.
As a movie enthusiast, I can’t help but acknowledge the significant impact the ship has had on the online fan community of our show, post the release of Season 2. In an interview with DECIDER, Alfred Gough emphasized that the core of the series revolves around the exploration of friendships among women, stating: “It’s a story about female friendship, and it’s wonderful how people can interpret it in their own unique ways – that’s what makes television so fascinating. However, at its heart, they are indeed friends.”
Miles Millar echoed similar sentiments, describing the series as “a tribute to sisterhood” while expressing his amazement at how fans have embraced this interpretation of our show.
A Wednesday & Enid Romance Could Still Happen Eventually
As a devoted fan, I’ve been wondering if the intriguing chemistry between A Wednesday and Enid in our favorite show will ever blossom into something more. However, the creators have stated that a romantic storyline isn’t currently part of their plan. But plans can change, as we’ve seen before. In an interview with THR back in 2022, they emphasized the strong friendship between these characters and mentioned that romance wasn’t their primary focus. Yet, Mark Millar hinted at potential surprises along the way: “We have a roadmap, and we’d like to take unexpected turns on this map. So, we’re open to all possibilities… But we won’t be led astray by fan speculation; instead, we’ll watch how these characters grow and their friendship unfold.
As a film aficionado, I eagerly anticipate the upcoming episodes delving deeper into Wednesday and Enid’s unique bond. This friendship is the pulsating core of our series, shaping our protagonist significantly and facilitating her personal growth, even if she seems resistant to such change. Moreover, it remains the most captivating duo on screen, a dynamic I hope will be expanded upon in Season 2, Part 2. However, when it comes to romance or not, let’s tread carefully to avoid any hint of queerbaiting – we need more Wednesday and Enid interactions, as their connection was underutilized during the first half of this season.
It’s clear that the “Wenclair” ship isn’t going to disappear any time quickly, as Season 3 of Wednesday has been officially confirmed (and there’s a high likelihood that it’ll extend past that due to its popularity). This gives us an opportunity to delve deeper into both characters, examining their individual growth and shared experiences. It is understood that a romance should not be contrived or inserted merely for the fans, but if it arises naturally from the direction these characters are going, it could prove to be intriguing.
Wednesday Has A Romance Problem – But It’s Not “Wenclair”
If there’s a romantic dilemma in Wednesday Season 2, it doesn’t stem from the absence of Wednesday and Enid’s romance, but rather the introduction of another love triangle. Given that the school is teeming with hormones as unpredictable as Hyde, it’s expected that Enid’s feelings have shifted towards a new character. However, the love triangle plotline doesn’t benefit any of the characters and watching it unfold is less captivating after experiencing one in Season 1.
In the second season of “Wednesday”, certain parts seem overly familiar to the structure of the first, with the love triangle being a part of that repetition. Enid, such an intriguing and integral character to the series, has enough depth to sustain the narrative without needing this particular complication. It’s my hope that the second half of Season 2 will finally resolve this issue, in one way or another.
Wednesday Season 2, Part 1 is now streaming on Netflix. Part 2 will release on September 3rd, 2025.
