In comic books, crossovers have always been a fan favorite. These encounters can result in friendships or rivalries, but there’s always an element of thrill when characters from different universes collaborate, breaking down the barriers set by their respective corporations to embark on extraordinary journeys together. The Avengers, Marvel Comics’ iconic superhero team, have been at the heart of numerous crossovers, often encountering some of pop culture’s most recognizable heroes and villains. Combining characters and concepts from different realms inevitably leads to wild and original tales that are nothing short of outlandish.
The Avengers have encountered characters from five different well-known franchises on five separate occasions, leading to tales that were both strange yet captivating, and tested the limits of what was possible within a crossover event.
5) Godzilla: King of the Monsters
In the late ’70s, Marvel Comics introduced a 24-issue comic series titled “Godzilla: Ruler of Monsters“, which depicted Japan’s famous giant monster causing destruction across America. During its run, characters like the Fantastic Four and the prehistoric duo Moon Boy and Devil Dinosaur attempted to subdue Godzilla, but they failed against the atomic beast. The comic ended with the Avengers assembling to confront the titanic terror, yet even for Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, including Thor, the battle-hardened Godzilla proved too strong, almost causing the collapse of the Empire State Building. Despite their efforts, this was not the last encounter between the Avengers and the king of monsters: on June 18th of this year, the first issue of “Godzilla vs. The Avengers” hit the stands for a century-defining clash.
4) Attack on Avengers
In the short tale “Assault on Avengers,” published in the magazine Brutus, the Marvel Universe experienced an invasion by the colossal titans from the popular manga and anime series Attack on Titan. This eight-page story unfolds during a battle where the Avengers engage these iconic titans, like the Armored Titan and Female Titan. Characters such as Spider-Man and Iron Man strategically evade the titan’s attacks by identifying their vulnerable spots. On the other hand, mighty heroes like the Hulk and Thor overpowered the invaders with their immense strength. Unlike many other crossovers, this story doesn’t provide a resolution; instead, it leaves readers hanging as the Guardians of the Galaxy appear to join the battle against the titans.
3) New Avengers/Transformers
2007 saw an unusual alliance form between the Avengers and the Autobots, as they joined forces to combat the menacing Decepticons. At first, the Avengers attacked the Autobots, suspecting them of being evil, but their common goal of thwarting Megatron’s world domination soon turned them into allies. In a peculiar plot twist, the Decepticons kidnapped Spider-Man in an attempt to use his radioactive blood for their own strength enhancement. The combination of Marvel superheroes and Transformers is already bizarre enough, but the series is filled with other standout moments such as Iron Man deploying a Transformer-scale suit against the Decepticons, and Dr. Doom aligning himself with Megatron.
2) Aliens Vs. Avengers
In one of the most unusual and violent team-ups of the last decade, the four-issue comic book series “Aliens vs. Avengers” depicts a world devastated by the creatures from the “Alien” movie series. This story unfolds decades after the initial alien invasion, with Earth now under xenomorph control. The remaining superheroes – Iron Man, Captain America, Hulk, Miles Morales, and Captain Marvel among them – must devise a plan to flee the planet and combat this extraterrestrial danger. What makes this narrative particularly strange is the significant mutations the xenomorphs undergo to pose a formidable threat to the Avengers, including developing resistance to magic. To add to the absurdity of this storyline, it includes cross-breeding between xenomorph and mutant DNA, Mr. Sinister creating a facehugger weapon, and a xenomorph version of Venom.
1) Amalgam Comics
Instead of simply merging characters from various franchises, the limited series known as Amalgam Comics constructed an entirely original universe blending Marvel and DC characters. The narrative revolved around the fusion of these two universes, resulting in a novel realm populated by hybrid heroes and villains. For instance, Superman and Captain America merged to form the Super Soldier, while Batman and Wolverine combined into Dark Claw. Notably, the Avengers amalgamated with the Justice League to become the JLA (Judgement League Avengers). These fused characters often had their own mini-series, showcasing entertaining and imaginative tales that delved into the myriad possibilities of a universe like this. Despite its absence from modern comics for decades, Amalgam Comics remains a memorable instance of a daring and outlandish crossover event in comic book lore.
