Gavin Newsom is taking legal action against Fox News.
California’s governor has initiated a defamation lawsuit for $787 million, accusing Fox News and anchor Jesse Watters of distorting his image during their coverage of a phone conversation he had with President Donald Trump regarding the deployment of the National Guard to Los Angeles in early June. The allegations claim they misrepresented him in their reporting.
Newsom stated in an interview with NBC News on June 27 that if Fox News continues to deceive the American public by spreading false information about Donald Trump, they should expect repercussions. He emphasized that Americans deserve reliable news from significant media outlets, and until Fox commits to honesty, he will persist in challenging their biased reporting.
The legal action, submitted in Delaware (where Fox News is based) and acquired by NBC News, focuses on the sequence of events during the conversation between Newsom and Trump, a claim made by Newsom that this call occurred in the wee hours of June 7, prior to Trump’s decision to dispatch the military to Los Angeles.
During Watters’ June 10 broadcast, he alleged that Newsom had lied about the call.
Governor Newsom accuses Fox News of deliberately misrepresenting facts and distorting truth in support of President Trump, during their disagreement over the deployment of California National Guard troops and Marines to Los Angeles in response to protests against the President’s immigration policies.
Prior to President Trump sending troops to Los Angeles on June 10th, he told Fox News correspondents that he had spoken with Governor Newsom the day before. However, Governor Newsom disputed this assertion in a social media post on X.
In my latest social media post on June 10th, I expressed my concern as a lifestyle expert: “No call or voicemail was received. It’s worrying that a President, who has ordered Marines onto our streets, seems unaware of the person he should be communicating with.
Currently, the amount Newsom is seeking in his lawsuit resembles the sum Fox News was ordered to pay as damages to Dominion Voting Systems in a defamation case back in 2023, due to the broadcast of false election allegations.
The lawsuit claims that Fox News, by prioritizing malicious propaganda over fundamental journalistic integrity, significantly contributes to the weakening of democracy’s core values – truthful representation. It is essential to correct these falsehoods and challenge Fox’s untruthful tactics to safeguard democracy from being overwhelmed by misinformation and deception.
Regarding the legal action, Fox News communicated to TopMob News that Governor Newsom’s publicity stunt, aimed at suppressing criticism against him, is baseless and frivolous. They are prepared to fiercely defend this case and eagerly anticipate its dismissal.
