The popular TV series “The Penguin,” initially intended as a limited run, recently made strides towards renewal for a second season. The drama on HBO Max was a tremendous success with its debut, ranking among the biggest launches following “The Last of Us.” As a spinoff from “The Batman” featuring Robert Pattinson as the Dark Knight, “The Penguin” sees Colin Farrell reprising his role as Oswald “Oz” Cobblepot. On Tuesday, it was announced by Variety that show creator Lauren LeFranc inked a new multi-series agreement with HBO and HBO Max, potentially opening doors for the development of “The Penguin Season 2” under this fresh contract.
According to reports, LeFranc’s fresh contract spans two years with both HBO and HBO Max. This agreement allows her to produce projects under her recently established Acid and Tender Productions label. LeFranc shared her enthusiasm about this deal in a press statement, highlighting her eagerness to collaborate with a company that has consistently backed her and her work. In her own words, she’s “ecstatic to extend my creative alliance with HBO.” They have been steadfast in their support of her work on The Penguin and beyond. Acid and Tender Productions was born from LeFranc’s passion for nurturing unique stories and viewpoints from talented writers and artists she admires. She grew up in writers’ rooms, and her dream is for Acid and Tender to become a sanctuary for storytellers who want to create authentic, unconventional, character-driven tales, regardless of genre.
Will The Penguin Season 2 Happen at HBO Max?
In 2021, LeFranc became connected with the spin-off of “The Batman,” which was subsequently greenlit as a series on HBO and HBO Max the following year. The initial season, consisting of eight episodes, was designed as a limited series, intended to bridge the gap between “The Batman” and “The Batman Part II.” The show stars Colin Farrell, Cristin Milioti, Rhenzy Feliz, and Deirdre O’Connell, with additional appearances by Clancy Brown, Theo Rossi, James Madio, Michael Kelly, Daniel J. Watts, Carmen Ejogo, and Deirdre O’Connell.
The television series, “The Penguin,” garnered a total of 24 Emmy nominations in various categories. Among them were Best Limited Series, Best Lead Actor and Actress, and Best Supporting Actress in a Limited Series for Farrell, Milioti, and O’Connell respectively. What’s even more remarkable is that “The Penguin” broke the record for the most Emmy nominations in 2025.
Although a formal announcement for Season 2 of “The Penguin” hasn’t been made yet, there have been hints about its possibility over the past few months. At present, Matt Reeves is busy working on “The Batman Part II,” which could potentially delay the production of “The Penguin” Season 2. Recently, it has been disclosed that discussions regarding a second season have taken place between Reeves and LeFranc. As things stand now, the second season of “The Penguin” is not expected to occur soon. If it does, it’s likely to happen after the release of the upcoming sequel to “The Batman.”
