Stephen King, renowned author, is often adapted into some of the most iconic films and TV shows, ranging from heartwarming masterpieces like “The Shawshank Redemption” to more divisive projects such as “The Dark Tower” or “Maximum Overdrive.” Despite the successes, there have been adaptations that failed to live up to the original work’s expectations. Thus, when a new Stephen King adaptation arrives, fans are always uncertain about what they might encounter. However, an upcoming movie based on one of his darkest and most prophetic novels is creating quite a stir among critics. This film adaptation of King’s 1979 novel “The Long Walk” has already been screened for critics, with early social media responses suggesting it could be a standout cinematic event.
Noah Levine from Blood Disgusting wrote that ‘The Long Walk’ is incredibly impactful, bringing out strong emotions in viewers. He likened it to Stephen King at his most terrifying and intense. According to him, the collaboration between JT Mollner and Francis Lawrence has produced a cinematic masterpiece.
The Long Walk is undeniably one of the year’s most powerful emotional punches, a book I’ve read multiple times. I thought I was ready to endure its poignant themes and heart-wrenching scenes, but no – each time, I find myself emotionally drained after finishing it. The movie definitely deserves this impact.

As a die-hard movie enthusiast, let me tell you that the acting from Cooper Hoffman and David Jonsson in “The Long Walk” is simply outstanding and deserves recognition. Courtney Howard from Variety raved about it, calling the performances “pitch perfect” and “exceptional.” She also praised the film as visceral, gripping, emotional, and provocative, going so far as to label it a brilliant adaptation of Stephen King’s work and one of the best films of the year. Russ Milheim from The Direct echoed her sentiments, stating that “The Long Walk” is an incredibly harrowing, terrifying, and traumatizing film, with Cooper Hoffman and David Jonsson delivering Oscar-worthy performances. To me, it feels like a modern masterpiece reminiscent of classics like “The Outsiders” and “Full Metal Jacket.
I’m thrilled to finally discuss how remarkable #TheLongWalk is! Cooper Hoffman delivers an authentic and multidimensional performance, while David Jonsson is simply exceptional. The intricate character development creates a palpable feeling of danger and mortality, yet there’s an underlying sense that our survival hinges on one another. Bravo!

The movie was highly commended by critics as an exceptionally impactful version of a Stephen King story. Andrew J. Salazar from DiscussingFilm declared it as one of the strongest adaptations of Stephen King’s works in recent times. He also noted that director Francis Lawrence didn’t hold back, effectively conveying the book’s messages about how authoritarianism is corroding today’s younger generation.
What Makes Stephen King’s The Long Walk So Special?
Originally published in 1979 under the pen name Richard Bachman, “The Long Walk” was the debut novel written by Stephen King during his freshman year at college from 1966 to 1967. The narrative unfolds in a dystopian interpretation of America where the populace is enthralled by an annual spectacle known as “The Long Walk.” This grueling contest compels 100 adolescent boys to walk unceasingly at a minimum pace of four miles per hour. Failure to keep up results in verbal warnings, followed by three warnings, which culminate in the walker being shot dead by the soldiers overseeing the event. The competition concludes when only one boy survives, earning him “The Prize” – any wish granted for the remainder of his life. The novel’s themes such as authoritarianism, loss of innocence, and the harsh pressures faced by young people continue to resonate powerfully today, fueling anticipation for the film adaptation.
As a die-hard movie buff, I’ve always been captivated by the raw power and profound psychological depth of “The Long Walk.” For decades, this masterpiece has remained close to my heart, but its journey to the big screen has been an elusive quest. Legendary filmmakers like George A. Romero and Frank Darabont were once attached to adapt the novel, yet it never materialized.
Now, with Lawrence at the helm – renowned for his work on the Hunger Games franchise – and a screenplay by JT Mollner, the dream of seeing “The Long Walk” come alive on screen is finally becoming a reality. The film features Sam Rockwell as Ray Garraty, the resilient protagonist, and Jeff Daniels as Peter McVries, his fellow contestant. Star Wars icon Mark Hamill adds an enigmatic edge to the role of The Major, the mysterious figure controlling the lethal competition. I can hardly contain my excitement!
The Long Walk is scheduled to be released in theaters on September 12, 2025.
