Through my dual artistic ventures in music and acting, I’ve had the opportunity to express myself creatively, and the feedback has been overwhelmingly favorable. It seems like this is what I’ve always strived and hoped for in my career.
In the latest Netflix thriller, Thomas plays Dr. Alex Anderson, a character who plays a crucial role not only in the overall storyline of the drama but also in the title itself. Married to Suranne Jones as Abigail Dalton, Alex works for Doctors Without Borders and is abducted while working overseas in French Guiana.
In a larger scheme aimed at undermining his wife, who is the prime minister, Alex appears to be an earnest man genuinely trying to help his family and those close to him. This characteristic particularly caught Thomas’s attention when he auditioned for the role, with Thomas stating that it was Alex’s heartfelt nature that truly resonated with him.
For me, it’s not just about watching a good man on TV; it’s essential to witness the kindness in his heart. This father, this husband, this virtuous individual. He’s not just a kind person to his family but also to his colleagues. So, when I saw that, it felt refreshing. It was a different kind of character. I’ve portrayed good men before, but this role carries a unique flavor.
Alongside praising the series for its exceptional writing by Matt Charman, Thomas also acknowledges Suranne Jones, his co-star and executive producer on Hostage. Since their characters don’t have many shared scenes due to the storyline, it was crucial for Thomas to make their relationship believable in the limited screen time they had.
Thomas goes on to say: “Collaborating with Suranne was effortless. We shared such a great energy on the set; she’s so friendly, jovial, always smiling and laughing – it made our work together a pleasure and a delight to go to set every day. I looked forward to starting each day working alongside Suranne.
In the initial sequence, as characters are depicted strolling through the forest, it marks the first day of filming for us. Typically, this can be a challenging day for many due to the unfamiliarity and the need for an introduction. However, on that particular day, we dived right in without much ado.
Although the show doesn’t directly mention political parties, its storyline is deeply entwined with contemporary issues, exploring topics such as immigration, civil unrest, and healthcare, all while maintaining the rapid pace typical of popular Netflix shows.
This material seems both timely and relatable; it’s something I believe many can identify with. I find it engaging. It’s a political thriller, taking place within government circles, specifically Downing Street, as well as at MSF (Médecins Sans Frontières). Through this series, I’ve learned about the remarkable work they carry out, something I was previously unaware of.
Thomas expressed his thoughts about the series’ impact, stating, “I believe it will enlighten people about current events if they’re not already informed. I aspire for it to strike a chord with viewers on a political level, showcasing global issues. However, it also portrays the human side of the characters, particularly Abigail who holds power, yet she is also a mother, wife, and daughter. She grapples with numerous relationships and emotions, which I hope audiences can relate to.
Much like Alex, he holds a significant role in our society as a doctor. Yet, beyond his professional life, he is also a family man, married and fatherly. I hope this duality resonates with people, understanding the complex choices and personal struggles he may face in balancing these important roles.
At the same time as working on Hostage, Thomas shared with me, he was also preparing for the launch of Being Poor Is Expensive. He found himself switching between filming scenes on location in the Canary Islands and rushing back to London to record a live album session at the Maida Vale Studios.
Instead of viewing it as a sudden change in pitch (tonal whiplash), Thomas effortlessly navigates through both artistic realms. He’s put in numerous years of dedication and effort in each industry.
Thomas momentarily stepped back from his music career, instead diving headfirst into acting. During this period, he landed significant roles in “Them: Covenant,” “Great Expectations” of 2023, “Black Cake,” and “The Serpent Queen.” Notably, Thomas is also known for his performances in “Top Boy,” “24: Legacy,” and “The Ipcress File.” Recently, he starred in Channel 4’s production titled “In Flight.
Thomas, having found success in American acting, emphasizes the significance for him, born in London and hailing from the UK, of returning to work there as well.
It’s commonly acknowledged that numerous Black British performers have voiced their opinions regarding the disparity in job prospects between the United States and the UK. The discussion, justifiably, focuses on stereotyping and the limited types of roles available for Black actors here in the UK.
Thomas, was this something that crossed your mind as you took on additional roles in American television series throughout the years?
At the same time, I was based in the UK, but I didn’t want to hit a wall in my career where I am. So, I chose to seize the opportunity that presented itself when it arose in the US, rather than regretting my decisions later. I wouldn’t want to look back and feel disappointed with myself for missing out on opportunities.
He expresses deep affection for America, as it offered him numerous chances, including substantial ones. At the moment, such roles might not have existed. Consequently, he felt compelled to depart and seize those opportunities. Nevertheless, he acknowledges that America is a significant hub for film and television storytelling, where he enjoys working.
After almost twenty years without releasing any new music, Thomas’ second studio album served as a significant comeback to his musical career. It seems that this triumphant return to the music scene would undoubtedly influence his future endeavors in other areas.
What truly matters for me is authenticity. The work must stem from an honest and genuine source; it should feel real. As a narrator, as I delve deeper into my craft and its intricacies, I find myself growing increasingly selective.
If I’m contemplating a comeback to music after 15 years, what message am I conveying? It doesn’t have to be excessively optimistic or one-dimensional; it’s more about, ‘What am I expressing?’ A thoughtful reflection, what am I contributing to the world?
Thomas elaborates: “I aim for the work I produce and the roles I choose in acting to be significant, impactful. They should establish a new standard, offer something unique, or challenge the norms of art or character development.
I’m approaching this role by drawing on my own experiences and background, aiming to bring something fresh and original to the character. As I navigate through the process, it’s all about discernment, putting in my best effort, and striving for excellence, even if the outcome isn’t always perfect. I know that I’ve given it my all to make it exceptional.
Thomas is not afraid to express his social or political opinions through his music, as being the producer gives him the freedom to do so. Regarding television dramas, Thomas believes there is room for improvement, emphasizing his desire for narratives that portray complex characters and avoid stereotypes by depicting “no one as a single-dimensional character.
Thomas expresses his desire to fully understand and appreciate the complexities, depths, and diversity within our collective identity, stating he yearns to grasp it entirely. Yet, he emphasizes the importance of also capturing the hidden aspects through backstage portrayals.
He expresses his preference for witnessing a variety of narratives being highlighted and individuals being granted chances to work in directing, scriptwriting, and commissioning roles, respectively.
As a budding actor, I must admit that breaking into this captivating world can sometimes feel like an arduous journey. Yet, I wholeheartedly believe it’s high time for a transformation in our industry to make room for fresh talent. After all, the magic of filmmaking is not just about the established stars but also about nurturing new ones who will one day light up our silver screens.
Thomas isn’t unique in transitioning from music to acting, as celebrities such as Little Simz, Kano, Ghetts, and Ashley Walters have also made significant appearances in notable films or series. These individuals are even some of Thomas’s fellow actors.
Thomas Walters initially sparked the idea of pursuing acting seriously for him. He shared, “Ashley Walters inspired me; I thought to myself, ‘If Ashley can do both acting and music, then surely it’s achievable.'” He chuckles at the memory.
Mentioning that many well-known musicians from the UK are talented actors as well indicates a shift in what we expect to see on our screens, I share with Thomas.
It seems to me that individuals possess multiple talents, and artistic expression doesn’t have to be limited to one form. If you’re passionate about art and creativity, there might be other areas where your abilities could flourish. Learn a new skill, explore a different craft, and you may discover success in an unexpected way. However, the true definition of success can vary – it’s about being creative and making the most out of any situation.
He notes: “Our goal is to welcome the upcoming group of individuals. We’re not merely preserving a spot for ourselves; we aim to avoid being the sole representatives, as you understand.
Thomas hints at an exciting upcoming project following “Hostage,” but remains vague about the details. Before our conversation ends, I couldn’t help but wonder if his exceptional talent for lyrics might extend to television or film composition. Thus, I inquire about any potential opportunities in this realm. Consequently, I ask him if such a venture could be possible for him.
Absolutely, I agree with you. As a musician and a storyteller at heart, I can adapt my art form. My album, in particular, embodies this transformation, as I am surrounded by exceptional storytellers, some of the finest in the global scene.

When pondering about the approach to create an album or narrative within a song, it definitely shapes my storytelling style. Therefore, if circumstances allow and luck prevails, I will certainly have the opportunity to dedicate time to such creative endeavors in the future.
When it comes to the type of TV shows he’d like to write, Thomas mentions that he’s open to various genres, including science fiction, drama, comedy, and romance, suggesting that any of these could be suitable choices for him.
Thomas not only acknowledges the potential for achievement, he specifically points out “we can accomplish anything” as his belief. He supports this view by referencing two outstanding pieces of diverse storytelling: Sinners and Dreaming Whilst Black. According to him, both exhibited exceptional, captivating narratives, were beautifully filmed, and received universal acclaim.
When inquiring about the types of Black British narrative he’d prefer to witness more often, he discloses his preference for: “I’m keen on seeing more refined, top-tier tales, extraordinary narratives, exceptional situations. Yet, I also long for commonplace stories.
He goes on to say: “I’m aiming for projects with significant investment and high-stakes, but I’m equally interested in everyday tales about regular folks. I want a narrative that follows a young man from the outskirts who adores his pet dog or aspires to learn horse riding. To me, it’s a major achievement when we can blend ordinary and extraordinary stories together.
