Is Marty Supreme based on a true story?

Director Josh Safdie has previously delved into true-to-life sports narratives. Prior to their major breakthrough, in 2013, he along with his brother Benny, helmed the direction of a documentary titled Lenny Cooke, featuring the lead subject in its title role, who was a basketball player at that time yet to fully experience mainstream success.

Currently, Safdie is stepping back into the sport-centric movie realm as a single director for the first time, and instead of traditional sports, he’s focusing on the thrilling game of table tennis.

In simpler terms, the movie “Marty Supreme” features Timothée Chalamet as Marty Mauser, a skilled table tennis player. An intriguing ensemble of talents includes Gwyneth Paltrow, Kevin O’Leary (best known for Shark Tank), film director Abel Ferrara, and rapper Tyler, The Creator.

Alongside his acting roles, Timothée Chalamet is also co-producing the upcoming film. Previously, he has been a co-producer on projects such as Bones and All and the Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown. However, it’s unclear whether this new movie is based on real events. For more details about its release later this year, keep reading below.

Is Marty Supreme based on a true story?

The movie traces the journey of Marty Mauser, a fictional character inspired by the legendary table tennis player Marty Reisman. However, unlike his real-life counterpart, the film won’t provide a verbatim account of his life and professional achievements.

Instead, as reported by Deadline, Marty Supreme is described as an “original story, not a biographical film.” Unlike Lenny Cooke, audiences should anticipate a dramatized portrayal of Reisman’s life and career.

Details about the plot are being tightly held for now, however, a teaser trailer has been released. You can view it here: [insert link]

Who was the real Marty Supreme?

In actuality, the well-known figure referred to as Marty Supreme or Marty Mauser was, in fact, named Marty Reisman. This individual graced this earth in 1930 and bid farewell at the age of 82 in 2012. He held the title of a champion table tennis player and his professional career extended an impressive half-century.

At the tender age of 12, Reisman embarked on his career, prompting whispers of his extraordinary skill to circulate widely. Comedian Jonathan Katz himself mentioned an instance where Reisman outplayed him using the flattened end of a chess piece instead of a bat.

Over the course of his table tennis career, Reisman earned five bronze medals at the World Championships, some in singles matches and others in partnership events. He also amassed a grand total of 22 major championship titles, among which were two US Open victories and a British Open title.

Throughout his life, he continued to actively participate in table tennis, and at the time of his passing, he held the position of President for Table Tennis Nation.

Compare Timothée Chalamet’s age at the movie’s release with the span of time between Reisman’s initial and last significant table tennis honors: When the film premieres, Chalamet will be 29, which is just half the duration separating Reisman’s awards in 1946 and 2002.

In 1974, Reisman penned a memoir called “The Money Player,” chronicling the life of America’s top table tennis player and hustler. Although obtaining a copy may be challenging nowadays, it could have potentially influenced the character of Marty Supreme.
