The DC Universe is still in its early stages, so we’re looking forward to discovering more about its intricacies and guidelines as time goes by. The DCU was launched anew by James Gunn and Peter Safran, starting with “Creature Commandos,” but truly took off this summer with the debut of “Superman.” This morning, a new chapter in the franchise commenced with the premiere of “Peacemaker” Season 2, offering insights into the broader universe as well as the key “Justice Gang” team responsible for its protection. Please be aware that this article contains mild spoilers for the season 2 premiere of Peacemaker.
At the start of season 2’s premiere of “Peacemaker”, the character Peacemaker (John Cena) attends an interview for the Justice League-like team, the Justice Gang. The panel conducting this interview consists of Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced), Green Lantern (Nathan Fillion), and Maxwell Lord (Sean Gunn). Despite their eagerness to be elsewhere, they offer a sneak peek about their organization. A key detail revealed is that the Justice Gang aims to minimize casualties, which might surprise viewers who remember them from “Superman”.
Big Changes for the Justice Gang
The Justice Gang aims to avoid causing harm in future encounters, however, their last outing against Boravia and Lex Luthor did not follow this path. You might remember that the climactic showdown in Superman saw Hawkgirl taking the life of the Boravian leader. While there were several motivations behind her actions, it could’ve also been avoided altogether.
In simpler terms, let’s avoid debating the ethical implications of eliminating ruthlessly wicked characters in fictional realms. However, this point raises an interesting contrast between the initial encounters of the Justice League. It’s possible that the rule against killing has always been in effect, and Hawkgirl might have chosen to disregard it. But remember the instance when they teamed up with Superman to combat a giant monster in downtown Metropolis? The Justice League was comfortable with eliminating the monster, while Superman was insistent on finding an alternative that preserved its life.
The new team guideline seems to have been implemented quite recently, possibly influenced by the events in the latest Superman movie. Additionally, Superman appears to be a new member of the team now, as he was spotted in the recap of Peacemaker, standing alongside the Justice Gang in a scene that replaced the previous Justice League cameo.
If Superman is indeed a member of the Justice Gang, then his strict “no-kill” policy could potentially be a point of contention. Throughout his history and as portrayed by David Corenswet in this DCU, Superman consistently prioritizes preserving life above all else – be it a human, a monster, or even a tiny squirrel. He’s known to go to extraordinary lengths to save lives.
In this scenario, Superman embodies those qualities, and it’s evident he is cultivating similar values among the team that aims – with hope – to someday be recognized as the Justice League.
