Written by Yamada Kanehito and illustrated by Tsukasa Abe, the manga “Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End” won awards and was turned into an anime in September 2023. It quickly gained popularity due to its distinctive and heartfelt storytelling. The first season, consisting of 28 episodes, aired over two cours and concluded in January 2026. By the end of the first season, Fern successfully passed the First-Class Mage Exam. Now, the group embarks on their journey to Aureole, a land where spirits reside. Throughout the 28 episodes, viewers experienced several emotional, touching, and satisfying moments as Frieren pursued her goal of meeting Himmel’s soul.
The anime skillfully blends contemporary happenings with remnants of yesteryears, resulting in a tale where two periods coexist simultaneously, which is what makes it so intriguing. Instead of following the story chronologically, we get glimpses of Frieren’s voyage with Himmel’s group that not only provide emotional depth but also influence her present choice to reconnect with Himmel’s spirit and delve deeper into him to alleviate her most profound regret. This narrative style enables viewers to experience the progression of time in a subtle yet poignant trip down memory lane, with Himmel serving as the focal point of these reminiscences. Upon rewatching the anime, these 10 flashbacks resonate much more deeply than on my initial viewing.
1) The Reason Frieren Collects Spells (Episode 2)
For many centuries, Frieren devoted herself to gathering magical incantations without pause. It wasn’t until she received a compliment on her magical abilities from Himmel that she discovered a hidden affection within herself. Prior to this moment, she amassed spells aimlessly, yet her interest in magic grew deeper after the encounter, though she was unaware of it. Upon concluding her adventure with Himmel’s group, Frieren continued to wander for extensive periods, seeking new magical discoveries on her own.
In the second installment, the narrative primarily laid groundwork for the tale, yet it offered insights into Frieren’s background and Himmel’s influence on her life. A notable memory surfaced where Frieren shared her floral enchantment with her comrades, who found great delight in it. This magical ability holds a unique significance to Frieren for reasons that the narrative gradually unfolds.
2) Himmel Understands Frieren More Than Anyone (Episode 4)
Instead of taking delight in celebrations or finding joy in everyday moments like witnessing a sunrise, Frieren appeared uninterested in nearly everything. Yet, Himmel sensed there was more to her than met the eye. On their travels, they arrived at a quaint village during New Year’s festivities, where villagers would gather by the seashore to witness the initial sunrise of the year. Himmel felt frustrated as Frieren opted out of attending the festival, but she showed no signs of discontent since watching a sunrise wasn’t something she ever took pleasure in.
Despite Himmel saying she’d love the sunrise as it reflects her nature, Frieren initially doubted this when she found it ordinary during her journey with Fern. However, what truly brought joy wasn’t just the sight of the sunrise, but Fern’s smile, which made the view meaningful. This is because, even though Frieren was isolated due to her eternal life, Himmel recognized her caring nature beneath the surface.
3) Himmel Leaves Traces of His Existence (Episode 7)
For a decade, Himmel’s group traversed the entire continent, combating any monsters they encountered along the way during a time of peace. It’s simple to overlook the shattered state of the world prior to the overthrow of the Demon King, given the story’s setting. The party rescued countless towns and hamlets, and as a token of appreciation, they proposed creating statues, particularly of Himmel’s, which he never refused. He often joked about his vanity, but preserving his legacy wasn’t solely about fame for Himmel; he wanted to leave behind evidence of his existence, and Frieren was a part of that journey.
Memories can get blurred after long periods, such as centuries, especially when one has a seemingly eternal life. Himmel desired Frieren to recall that he, Heiter, and Eisen were real entities, not just mythical figures etched in history. His wish was granted as Frieren preserved their memories for all those years, and wherever she journeyed, it reminded her of the past shared with Himmel and his companions.
4) A Real Hero Carrying a Fake Sword (Episode 12)
Regardless of his immense power, Himmel never managed to claim the fabled hero’s blade. Though the series hasn’t fully disclosed his capabilities, it’s easy to surmise he was incredibly powerful, given he led a party that vanquished the Demon King. All he possessed were a replica hero’s sword and unyielding resolve, which was sufficient to earn him a place in history.
In the general consensus, it’s believed that Himmel employed a mythical artifact to battle the Demon King. However, Frieren understands that his uniqueness didn’t stem from the need for such a legendary tool. Instead, she recalls the moment when he shared stories about his sword and his unwavering belief with the party. As she gazes at his happy face, the anime hints that Frieren views Himmel differently compared to Heiter and Eisen.
5) Stark’s Tragic Backstory Explains His Low Self-Esteem (Episode 12)
In Episode 12, we delve into not one, but two compelling origin tales. As the narrative progresses, it centers on Stark, a native of Klee’s Warrior Villages, born into an environment where he faced prejudice from birth, even from his own father. His sole source of kindness was his elder brother, Stoltz, who was admired by all in the village. In an unexpected turn of events, monsters assaulted their village, and every warrior gave their life in battle except for Stark, who fled instead.
For several years, he harbored a deep sense of guilt that significantly affected his self-worth, leading to low self-esteem. Remarkably gifted as he was, fear of imagined threats constantly haunted him. Moreover, it’s important to note that he underestimated his own strength compared to the Solar Dragon, unaware of his greater power. His recurring fears and reluctance to confront challenges were not merely for comedic effect, but instead stemmed from a profound and sorrowful backstory.
6) Himmel Gives Frieren a Ring (Episode 14)
In my own words, I’d put it this way: My affection for Frieren has always been subtle yet profound. I didn’t strive to win her heart in a traditional sense, but rather found joy in sharing moments and exploring the world alongside her. I was well aware she might never fully comprehend the extent of my feelings, but that was perfectly fine by me. There were occasions when I’d surprise her with something unexpected, knowing full well she wouldn’t dwell on it too much. This unspoken bond between us has been a source of comfort and happiness in my journey across the continent.
Instead of giving a mirrored lotus patterned ring symbolizing eternal love, he put a ring on her finger. However, Frieren didn’t immediately perceive it as a token of affection. Maybe it was because, to an elf like her, human emotions can appear fleeting compared to their extended lifespans. As a result, she typically avoided forming deep relationships with humans. Yet, his quiet devotion shifted the way she viewed life, a realization that came to her too late.
7) Flamme Always Knew Frieren Was Destined For Greatness (Episode 21)
For more than a millennium following her passing, Flamme remains revered as the most accomplished sorceress in human history. Recognizing Frieren’s innate magical prowess, she took the elf under her wing as a disciple. Apart from Himmel, Frieren was the only one who truly grasped the depth of her abilities. Despite her extraordinary lifespan, power and recognition were never her pursuits; rather, she found joy in uncovering magic through exploration. Even if it’s Serie, an esteemed mage known for longevity, Frieren wouldn’t want magic knowledge handed to her – she prefers the journey of discovery herself.
In contrast to Serie flourishing amidst demon-induced turmoil, Flamme believed that a unique individual like Frieren belonged in an age of tranquility. Her unwavering faith in Frieren as her apprentice led Flamme to foresee that she would be the one to vanquish the Demon King. Though Flamme is no longer present, her prophecy proved accurate in due course.
8) Himmel’s Adventurous Side Explains More About His Character (Episode 23)
Despite the perilous nature of their trek towards the Demon King’s Castle, Himmel eagerly seized the opportunity to enjoy every moment with his companions. He found immense joy in delving into each hidden corner within a dungeon, and the added bonus of sharing this adventure with those he held dear only amplified the pleasure. Naturally, his friends often complained that he was being idle, yet Himmel’s enthusiasm was so infectious that he effortlessly convinced them to join him in these explorations.
Making Frieren agreeable was relatively straightforward, as she could be enticed by the prospect of discovering uncommon spells within the dungeons. This tactic always worked, and before long, Frieren found herself growing fond of the dungeons as much as he did. The flashback underscores another transformation Himmel instigated in her, providing yet another reason for her to delight in her surroundings.
9) Flamme Is the Catalyst of the Era of Humans (Episode 25)
In the narrative, Flamme eventually passed away due to old age, but not before shaping an era where humans could openly learn and utilize magic. She convinced the Emperor to back magic research, thereby empowering humans to counter the Demon King’s forces. Prior to this, the use of magic by humans was looked down upon as it was largely associated with demons. Although Flamme ushered in a new phase in human history, she recognized that much work remained post her tenure and sought Serie’s aid.
In the story, Flamme died of old age, but before doing so, she instigated an era where humans could learn and practice magic freely. She persuaded the Emperor to fund magical research, thereby giving humans the power to combat the Demon King’s army. Previously, magic use by humans was considered a taboo due to its association with demons. However, Flambe foresaw that her work was just the beginning and enlisted Serie’s help for what followed.
In my journey, I, Serie, unwittingly shredded Flamme’s will in full view of the legendary mage Frieren. As we strolled together, I found myself reminiscing about Flamme’s childhood, a sense of nostalgia washing over me. However, I carefully concealed any emotion that might have surfaced.
During our walk, it dawned on me that a thousand years from now, the era of humanity will commence. In this new age, a formidable being, be it the fabled Demon King or a mere human mage, will possess the power to fell Frieren.
The advent of humanity’s era is imminent, and though Fern lacks the mana and experience that Frieren wields, she more than compensates with an abundance of raw talent. The path ahead is uncertain, but I am confident that Fern will rise to the occasion when the time comes.
10) Frieren Meets Himmel For the First Time (Episode 27)
Throughout most of the initial season, it seemed as if Himmel pursued Frieren due to her elven mage abilities and his perception of her hidden potential. However, our assumptions were dramatically different from the truth. You see, I discovered that Himmel, as a young boy, was once lost in the woods and encountered Frieren for the first time. Overwhelmed by tears, he left her feeling uncomfortable, and she struggled to console him at the time.
She cast her favorite spell, instantly blooming a vast array of flowers, a trick which Frieren soon forgot about, yet left an indelible mark on Himmel’s life. Serie, however, had long considered the charm superfluous, but it was this very spell that irrevocably altered Frieren’s destiny.
