James Gunn Already Wishes He Could “Lucas the Sh*t” Out of 1 DCU Release

In simpler terms, James Gunn, the creator of Peacemaker Season 2, has revealed major changes in the plotline and hinted at potential revisions to Season 1 that might be retroactively implemented. Alterations like these are frequent in DC comic books, often triggered by storylines such as “Crisis on Infinite Earths” or “Flashpoint”. However, unlike these events, Gunn isn’t employing the multiverse concept to explain the shift from Peacemaker’s original continuity, which was part of the old DC Extended Universe based on 2021’s The Suicide Squad, to a new universe. Instead, he’s simply making these changes without using the multiverse explanation. [SPOILERS for Peacemaker Season 2 ahead.]

In a departure from established lore, Peacemaker Season 2 deliberately alters the continuity by keeping the majority of Season 1 as DC Universe canon. However, a notable difference is the exclusion of the Justice League’s cameo in the finale. Instead, a different group – referred to as the Justice Gang – alongside Superman and Supergirl, appear following the battle against the butterflies, not the Snyderverse’s team of superheroes. In response to speculation about whether he would return to modify the first season on HBO Max to change this scene (similar to how George Lucas altered Star Wars), Gunn clarified his intentions and reasons for doing so, as well as why such an edit wasn’t feasible in this case.

Gunn expressed his desire to rework the situation similarly to how Lucas transforms Star Wars films with advanced special effects, but regrettably, due to financial constraints, he cannot do so as he prefers to allocate funds towards enhancing visual effects for the upcoming Supergirl movie instead.

James Gunn Says Normal DC Fans Don’t Care About Canon

In the second season of “Peacemaker,” we discover a new dimension being accessed through the Quantum Unfolding Chamber (QUC), reminiscent of the technology used by Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor to create his personal universe in “Superman.” However, unlike entering the DCU where the Justice League has already formed, director James Gunn is not planning for Peacemaker to physically step into this alternate world before its establishment.

Gunn proposed an idea where the character Peacemaker from ‘Season 2’ could be considered the DCEU (DC Extended Universe) version of the character, despite not officially being him. He joked that it might seem complex for casual viewers, but they typically don’t delve into such intricate continuity details.

excitement. He acknowledged that it might not fit perfectly with the past, but he found a straightforward approach to be the best, which is simply saying, “This world has a slight twist.” We’re familiar with multiple universes, and in this one, everything remains as it was in season one – except for the Justice League and Batmite.

Gunn Explained His DCU Canon Changes Recently

One question that often arises when Peter Safran and I took charge of DC is, “What comprises the DC Universe?” According to Gunn on a recent episode of Peacemaker: The Official Podcast, the worlds inhabited by characters like Superman and Creature Commandos are part of this universe. So far, only these two worlds are definitively canonical, and the same will hold true for Peacemaker season 2, which will also be a fully canon addition to the DC Universe.

Gunn mentioned that during season 1’s 2022 production, some aspects needed adjustments as they didn’t quite align with the established world. This was due to writing for the DCEU, which was a bit disorganized back then. Notably, references to Justice League characters were included, but these heroes haven’t been introduced in this particular continuity yet.

Following Chris Smith, portrayed by John Cena, criticizing DC Extended Universe superheroes such as Superman (Henry Cavill), Batman (Ben Affleck), Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), and the Flash (Ezra Miller) throughout the first season, a cameo appearance by the Justice League was featured at the end of the season. Although this is no longer considered canon, the scene featuring Momoa and Miller, who both used profanity in their roles, will remain in HBO Max.

Peacemaker Season 2, episode 1 is available to watch now on HBO Max.
